Review of The Life Of Budori Gusuko - SLA Screening Review by Reevothemusefan
When I first looked at the trailer for The Life Of Budori Gusuko, it looked like a well animated and basic adventure story, which I felt I could get into if it was done right. But when I watched the film, it felt wrong in so many ways that it might prove to be one of the worst animated movies of my year.
The film was made by Tezuka Productions and was directed by Gisaburou Sugii (Street Fighter II Movie, Lupin III: The Legend of Twilight Gemini) and one positive thing I can say about the film is that the animation is good. A fair amount of creativity has gone into various character designs, which gives the show a unique feel at times; there is also that rare funny moment that got a laugh from the audience but these were the only good things about the movie. So what is so terribly wrong with it?
The film starts off with an introduction to our main protagonist, young cat Budori Gusuko, and his family (Father, Mother and sister named Neri). They are living a normal life in the old forest village but things start to go wrong when cold weather hits the forest for a number of years leading to famine in the village. It's not long until Budori's parents start to disappear, leaving him and his sister alone in the house. After a few days, a mysterious cat with a cape appears and kidnaps his sister and this is where Budori's journey begins.
Your first guess then is probably that the whole movie is about Budori Gusuko trying to save his family, while also trying to help his village with the famine - but this would be a very big no. In matter of fact, this plot point is never brought up again and Budori Gusuko decides to travel around like nothing ever happened and mentioning it to almost no-one, which brings out one of my biggest issues with the show.
Another big issue is Budori Gusuko himself and his character. He is one of the blandest main characters I've encountered, due to his monotone delivery of the dialogue (eighty per cent of which consists of "Yes"). He never shows any emotional expression except for when he's crying but even then he still keeps that empty stare that I really detested. He is easily one of the worst things about the movie.
I just wish there were some moments where characters would talk about Budori Gusuko's situation because the supporting characters have a lot more life in them.
The film is supposed to be a kids' movie which brings up my next gripe. The plot has a structure but most of the audience felt lost for the most part. For example: Gusuko starts to dream about another world which contains a lot of weird situations for him but you are never given an explanation when this happens. If it can make adults confused, the film fails both as a children's and an adult movie.
I would compare this to last year's worst Scotland Love Anime film, Nerawareta Gakuen, but at least that film was bad in a somewhat entertaining way and had a few interesting ideas. The Life Of Budori Gusuko is worse because it's really boring, it has an awful main characte, not to mention a confusing plot and ending, so it's hard for me to recommend to anyone.
In Summary
A creative world ruined by a confusing plot and terrible main character; not recommended.
Final score: 3 out of 10
