Review of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin #2 by Ian Wolf
"Spanish songs in Andalucia, Mandolina, oh my corazon.
Spanish songs in Granada, oh my corazon." - The Clash
Earlier in the year All the Anime imported the collector's edition of the first episode of the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin OVA, retelling the events of the original Gundam series from the young eyes of two of the main characters. This collection included lots of bonus features and the collection for the second episode, Artesia's Sorrow, is also full of material. Don't worry if you could not get your hands on a copy, as you can still stream the episode on Daisuki or import the standard Blu-Ray edition from Japan.
Continuing on the first episode, brother and sister Casval and Artesia Deikun have fled Side 3 following an attempt on their life. They have now landed on Earth, where they are now living in Andalucia, Spain, having been adopted and changed their names to Edouard Mass and the familiar sounding Sayla Mass. While they are there however the house they are residing is attacked by agents of Side 3's ruling powerhouse, the Zabi. With their adopted father having just survived the attack, it is suggested that they should move to Side 5, in particular to the Texas Colony, where they should be safer.
Together the Mass family get along with the new hosts, the Aznable family, whose eldest son Char looks almost exactly like Edouard, and wishes to join the Zeon Armed Forces. While staying in the Texas Colony though Sayla has to go through much loss, with the deaths of those closest to her, and with Edouard becoming increasingly violent towards other people. Meanwhile, in Side 3 Ramba Ral, who helped to protect the Casval and Artesia, or Edouard and Sayla, whichever you prefer, find himself being part of a new project for the Zeon Armed Forces: namely testing out their latest mobile suits.
In this episode we begin to see more development of the characters. There is the obvious feature that we see the names Sayla Mass and Char Aznable being used for the first time if you tell the story chronologically, plus there are cameos from other character in the series like Amuro Ray and Mirai Yashima. You also have the developments in technology and the first appearance of Zeon's mobile suits. While in the first episode there was a lot of action and battles, in the second episode it is more about the drama and the relationships between the characters.
However, the biggest appeal of this collection is the extras. Like before, this comes in a special box with cover art from the creator of The Origin manga, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Inside the case you have a special sleeve contain Yasuhiko's art, the Blu-Ray disc with its own special sleeve, and several books (all in Japanese) ranging from a 290 page book of storyboards, a 32 page book with more of Yasuhiko's art, another 12-page book with the Blu-Ray, and a line-art book which contains an actual animation cel. On the disc itself, there is (Japanese only) episode commentary, trailers, footage of the airing of the first episode, and both English and Japanese translation.
If you missed getting the first collector's edition though, do not worry: All the Anime are still have some limited stock. Episode III, Dawn of Rebellion, will be released in Spring 2016.
Meanwhile, the actual, original series of Mobile Suit Gundam, released in 1979, comes out next week.
Final score: 8 out of 10
