Review of Inferno Cop by Reevothemusefan

What is Inferno Cop, you may ask as you read this review? Is it a new unknown DVD that has sneakily appeared out of nowhere? Well no, it's actually an anime that started streaming on YouTube back on Boxing Day last year, so why have I decided to review this show now? Well, it's quite possibly one of the best three minute anime shorts I’ve ever watched.
Some of you may see that Inferno Cop was animated by the unknown Studio Trigger. Most of the staff are ex-employees of Studio Gainax and one of the creators of Studio Trigger is Hiroyuki Imaishi who was the director of fan-favourites Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking. So from this angle, the show has a very interesting studio behind it.
Jack Knife Edge Town is a place in disarray where criminals run free and threaten civilians, the police are corrupted from keeping the peace since the criminals always pay their taxes, saying this to the police avoids going to jail, and it seems as if the police are only interested in downloading their illegal anime. However, Inferno Cop arrives to defeat these criminal scum and shows no mercy to anyone who breaks the law. All these wrongdoers are part of the Southern Cross group and it is up to Inferno Cop to stop this evil group and so his epic adventure starts.
The problem with most three minute shorts I’ve watched (take for example the ones on Crunchyroll) is that they normally rely on one joke to carry the whole show, making it predictable and unfunny and having no plot whatsoever. However, Inferno Cop is the total opposite, every episode brings a ton of unpredictability and random humor that I absolutely loved. Even in the early stages of the show, the plot is thrown out of the window and Inferno Cop is tossed into all sorts of situations. In one episode you have him taking part in a car race to win a million yen, next episode you have him surrounded by a zombie apocalypse. I always got a laugh from every episode.
One thing you will notice as soon as you see the characters, is that the show is not animated for the most part. The characters are basically like cardboard cut-outs and they move like it as well. To some people, this would be unacceptable and a big turn- off, but, I feel that Studio Trigger turned what could have been a huge hindrance into a way to make the show even more funny; a gunshot from Inferno Cop can blow a villain to shreds or a rapid-fire attack from his pistol can cause an explosion. It's one of the show's biggest charms and certainly gives it a unique feel. The soundtrack adds to the comedy as well.
The show also has a bunch of references, not only Japanese ones but Western ones also, including some you might not expect. Obviously you'll recognize that Inferno Cop's character design is a tribute to Ghost Rider but there are a lot more – from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Back To The Future, from Neon Genesis Evangelion to Gurren Lagann; they don't hammer the show with too many but it's quite nice to notice them.
You can finish the whole 13 episode show in around forty minutes and I would probably understand if people started to get bored of the random humour but I feel that the show does enough to make you watch all of it. The episode count is just about right, otherwise the show could have easily gone stale, and it ends on a surprisingly bitter-sweet moment, which I appreciated.
The whole Inferno Cop series is available to watch on Anime Bancho's YouTube channel and I will provide an embedded link to the first episode.
In Summary
Inferno Cop is up there as one of the best three minute short anime series; it never takes itself seriously and is a ton of fun to watch. Please check it out!
Final score: 8 out of 10
