Review: Mobile Suit Gundam Movie I

Picking up the heavy burden of starting at square one with the famous Gundam franchise, I've reviewed Beez's DVD release of the vintage Mobile Suit Gundam Movie I (the first movie in a trilogy that retells the original Gundam series).
Appearances aside, I was quietly impressed by Mobile Suit Gundam Movie I. It's a multi-layered story about war, taking glances at the epic scale of mecha-dominated combat but also compelling personal struggle and sacrifice. Like the best science fiction, it contains snap shots from the author's contemporary world and transforms it into something frightening in it's realism but awe-inspiring in its scale.

Cheers. I was a little anxious about writing this review. I know there are a lot of avid Gundam fans out there and I didn't want to let them down.

To be honest, this movie has really got me interested in the whole Gundam franchise and as soon as the DVD finished I was soon looking for release dates for the next two ones. I really enjoyed the characterization, especially with the mysterious Char, a rare villain who doesn't seem to be aligned with either side.

I've got the first two volumes of Gundam SEED sitting next to me waiting for review and they should be my next target after Paranoia Agent.

What, we're not that scary are we? Besides, a review is just opinion anyway, and I find what other people think about the series I like interesting regardless.

Have fun watching SEED, despite what a lot of hardline Gundam fans say its quite good fun, even though it at first glance it seems to be just an updated version of the Movies. They have their similarities, but they are quite different.

Well it was supposed to be thats why Fukuda described it as Moblie Suit Gundam for the 21st century and why its the only one of the non UC shows to have Mobile Suit in the title
