Martin Butler has reviewed Black Jack, a movie based on the classic 'medical' manga series from anime legend Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy, Metropolis), out now on UK DVD courtesy of Manga Ent..
Black Jack stands out as a well-written and original film, with an enigmatic central character, good quality animation and an intelligent storyline that make up for the lack of extra features on the DVD. If you are looking for an anime film that’s a little bit different, this is well worth checking out.

It's a solid movie. I watched when it was the on Sci-Fi channel and was quietly impressed. It's a little weak in parts but on the whole, a rather interesting story with a very intriguing main character in Black Jack (what's the explaination behind his face?... anyone know?)

I think he lost half the skin from his face in a war, when he was operating as a field surgeon, and the other side was hastily grafted on, the other side is darker which is where his name 'Blackjack' is derived from. I'm sure I read something along those lines a while back, an interesting side note: Tezuka actually trained to be a doctor, so a lot of what you see and read in Blackjack is (to a degree) scientifically sound.
