Thanks to the makers' almost reverent adherence to the source material Berserk is every bit as exciting on the small screen as it was on the page, the epic sweep of Miura's manga has made the translation intact, boasting intense action, drama and a sprinkling of political intrigue that'll keep even the most ardent fantasy fan smiling.

Great story but the ending does let the series down a bit.

I personally felt that the story was so engaging and the characters so well developed that the ending didn't spoil it that much.

The first time I watched the ending, it annoyed the hell out of me. I was like 'Wait, that's it?'. But then I watched it again. One way to look at it is that the whole series is a prologue to episode 1, sort of like Batman Begins.
But then, I have another way of looking at it. I like to call this way, 'Where the hell is season 2!?'. It's been rumoured for a while, but I guess it's just one of those internet rumours that comes and goes and nothing comes of it. (Sort of like the live-action Evangelion movie, a-heh.)
I still rank Berserk as one of my top anime, even though I haven't watched it in a while. It's faithful to the books (mostly), even going so far as to do a scene shot-for-shot following the frames of the comic. The music is awesome, the dub is actually pretty decent, and the drawing is pretty clean. The only thing I have a fault with is that there isn't any more of it. Ah, well. There's always the books. If you haven't read them, I recommend them.

The Dreamcast game 'Sword Of The Beserk' follows on after the anime series.

And what a fine game it is (although the cutscenes were interminable. Jeez).

In terms of plot it's very loosely based on the 'Guardians of Desire' story arc from the early volumes of the manga, with a few twists. I paid two quid for my copy brand new :)
