According to various reports, CAPCOM and Sony Pictures Entertainment of Japan have joined forces to produce an original CG animated movie for the Resident Evil (a.k.a. Biohazard) franchise. Of course, a trilogy of US financed live action Resident Evil movies have been created over the last 5 years, but this new project (subtitled "Degeneration") is said be a completely original story, separate from the story lines running through out the action-horror movies and video games.

Talking of big budget movies coming out of Japan - it appears that the on/off Hollywood adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's sci-fi classic AKIRA has taken another step towards reality as recent rumors suggest that Ireland's little known Ruairi Robinson has been signed on to direct. Robinson is an Oscar nominated animation director who's worked mainly on short films; notably "Fifty Percent Grey" and the violent "Silent City" (stream over at YouTube).

Ruined my day. How could they

Fantastic, this is the first I've heard of it.

If the film sticks to the original story in the majority, I'll be happy. If it turns into yet another run of the mill action movie; I won't.

Personally, Like GITS Id prefer them not to make it, but you never know, might be good.

Agreed. When It's done so well the first time around, why remake it? Still, as you say it doesn't immediately condemn it to crapness. It's just... unecessary.
