recommendations?

hi, i'm a frighteningly new member here, i'm not sure how these are usually done but... can anyone recommend me some anime? i'd like to say i'm new to anime and i have no idea where to start, but the truth is i'm just lazy. i've seen and enjoyed all the things that looked instantly appealing to me, Animatrix, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Blood - The Last Vampire and such, but i've occasionally tried to go a bit deeper (Windy Tales, Jin-Roh, Sky Blue) and i've been left slightly unfulfilled. so now i'm looking for help.
it's hard to say what my tastes are, because i enjoy the on-the-nose, guns and fights style of Bebop and Akira, but i'm really looking for something a bit more beautiful and personal, rather than more post-apocalyptic "cyberpunk" stories... Windy Tales looked like it had what i was looking for, beautiful animation, imaginative story, but seemed a little too... flat.
i'm still looking forward to things like Ergo Proxy, and finally seeing Ghost In The Shell: Innocence, and i'd be open to more suggestions in that area, but can anybody help me out in the more introspective, different anime?

sorry, i just realised how long that was. but i felt the need to get a bit in-depth. thanks!

Haibane Renmei is taylor-made to your specifications. It is beautiful, personal and even slightly mysterious.

Outlaw Star's a bit like Cowboy Bebop, just with more talking, and humour...

What about Hellsing or Trigun? I haven't seen either, but they might be good..

I can not praise Haibane Renmei enough. Other titles that are coming to mind when mentioning "different" are Boogiepop Phantom, Kino's Journey and Serial Experiments Lain.

thanks for the suggestions :)

i'll look out for them all. i get paid at the end of this month, it looks like i'll be spending most of it on widening my taste in anime.

Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain have to be mentioned for series.

As for films, try both vampire hunter D films, and almost anything from Studio Ghibli. Oh, and Orguss 02 - a 6 episode mecha OVA with a very very deep story.

I agree with Haibane Renmei and Lain (even though I've only seen the first volumes of each) and I'll throw in Paranoia Agent as well. Coincidently, all three are available in the red MVM Boxset, available from The Works for a mere tenner. It was my first taste of anime, and I've never gone back since, so I'd definately give it a go if I were you!

oh yeah i was looking at those, but i didn't really see anything that looked that appealing. not anything that was worth spending a tenner that i didn't have anyway. but i'll look at them again since they've been recommended. thanks people :)

Haibane Renmei is definitely worth spending a tenner on (or even a twentier ;)) - it doesn't look like much but it is oh so beautiful. ^_^ There ought to be a new genre for it - Beautiful Anime. :p

I would also reccommend Texhnolyze. It starts off very slowly (the first episode will probably make you go 'huh? o_0') but if you're interested in weird stuff you're almost certain to like it. 8)

I'll join the legions of people who are falling over themselves to recommend Haibane - it's possibly my all time fave. Ever.

Not only is Paranoia Agent highly recommendable, but pretty much anything directed by Satoshi Kon. That man is a genius!

Memories is also good to start off with - it consists of three separate films that are very different from one another.

i just watched the first two episodes of Haibane, it's wonderful so far. really beautiful and... for want of a better word, cute. haha. i'm not usually one for cute anime/manga, but this has enough mystery behind it for me. :)

Well, if anyone asks me for any Anime recommendations then the first Anime which pops into my mind is Neon Gensis Evangelion. It's one of the greatest ever Animes and still popular today after 10 years.

yeah is a great choice to begin with. That and maybe Hellsing every newb ive watched Hellsing likes it as its not too taxing

i might give Hellsing a try after i've exhausted all other options, as it really doesn't look like my sort of thing. and as i said above, i'm not a newbie, i'm just looking for more options. i'm actively looking for something more thought-provoking or taxing, as you say.

Serial Experiments Lain repeat Ad Infinitum.

Glad you're liking Haibane. It really is a thinkers series. On the surface it seems reasonably lightweight, especially to start with, but as it builds you'll probably be contemplating the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything! 8) (I know i was!)
