Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Kai

Hi All,

Please can someone definitely confirm that the Manga UK release of DBZ is widescreen (16:9)? Not pillar boxed 4:3 like Kai.

I'm currently trying to cancel my order for Kai S2&3 on ebay after putting on S1 and seeing that its ratio is 4:3, I can't stand it.

Thanks

I don't actually care for Dragonball Z, but I seem to remember Manga stating on twitter multiple times that it's 16:9. (Edit: A one star reviewer on Amazon complains of this so it is indeed 16:9.)
It is meant to be 4:3 though, but it's cropped to 16:9, meaning that you are missing some of the image from the top and bottom of the screen.
If Kai being it's native 4:3 really bothers you that much, set your picture mode to zoom/wide zoom or something if you can. It's no different to how you are watching DBZ now.

Thanks for the reply, i was actually just gonna reply and say i'd found the info on Amazon, same reviewer, haha.

with regards to the picture my LG TV doesn't have the best viewing picture modes, as it was cutting too much off the top of the picture, i couldn't see half of Raditz face at one point. Having seen Kai on Kix I know it's not as bad as that, it was definitely too much. I don't mind a bit of hair missing but..... Tbh I read they have reduced the violence and gore, so happy to get the normal series, plus its backing the uk market :D

Thanks again for the response.

Dragon Ball Z Kai

I have read a few forums that state that DBZ Kai DVD plays in widescreen, can anyone confirm if this is true. Well not actual widescreen but basically not have any black bars down the side (pillarboxed) coz it stretches. A bit like Manga's old release of Ninja Scroll.

I can't seem to find a review that tells me.

I noticed Berserk for instance is on Amazon with the aspect ratio as 4:3 - 1.33:1 but this plays stretched across the screen doesn't it?

Help would be very much appreciated

This is the forum that states the DVD is widescreen

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with watching something with a 4:3 aspect ratio?
Everything was like that at one time believe it or not ;)

I just don't like the fact that I'll be watching the Simpsons whilst having my tea and its covering all areas of my screen, then after washing the pots :D I'll stick DBZ Kai on and have these black bars down the side. Find it strange and distracting. Worse thing was, I was watching it on Kix, which has been manipulated for TV, so when I first got the Blu-ray it was a bit of a shock.

To be honest I've accepted it and it wasn't bugging me too much last night, so no worries now

Oh yeah I remember watching Anime on Channel 4 on my old CRT but the difference was everything I watched was like that, now I'll be watching something widescreen or something stretched, so it's just a bit strange to see black bars down the side, like I say tho, it's not bugging me as much now.

Got a new LG TV, I can now stretch it a bit and reduce the size of the big bars at the sides :D

I'm thinking about going mad and buy DBZ. So 4:3 ratio? I can live with that but can anyone tell me regarding image quality, i guess funimation sets might have a little better quality...? Can anyone let me know this please.

I got really confused at first, then realised this is an old thread, haha.

DBZ Kai is 4:3. DBZ (original) is 16:9 cropped.

Personally would suggest getting Kai, I found it a lot more entertaining and it doesn't drag on like the normal series. In terms of quality DBZ looks fine (Funi version), can't comment on the Manga UK release but I'm guessing there isn't really any difference. As for Kai, it looks stunning on Blu-ray.

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

Well, DBZ (original) is 4:3. The FUNimation "Orange Box" release was cropped while remastering to be 16:9, and that is the version on Manga's discs. The much lauded Japanese "Dragon Box" remaster was 4:3, and FUNimation did also later release this version also IIRC.

I'm depressed that I know this much about DBZ.

I forgot about the Dragon Box. Oh and you seem to know a lot about anime in general, so your always gonna know more than you need to

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

I dont wanna go for Kai at the moment, i wanna get the Z for now, i just dont know if i try the Funi or Manga version... To be honest, it sucks that the Z that was 4:3 originally got cropped to 16:9.... I would like to have that the original way but...

I had the idea that the FUni version could be a little better with picture quality but can anyone confirm that? I can just read the uk reviews and someone will probably mentioned something...

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

Other than the cropping, they all did some aggressive noise reduction causing loss of detail and blowing out of highlights - there's a comparison out there showing someone's teeth that are individually visible on the original print but smudged together on FUNi's remaster.

--edit--

Details and some comparisons here: http://dbzf.co.uk/topic/8308327/1/

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

Thanks for comparisons. They did cut a lot of the image, that sucks. :\

Re: Questions about Dragon Ball Z Manga UK Release and DB Ka

They will have picked obvious examples for the comparisons so most of the time it probably isn't that bad; watching the show without reference to the uncut version you might not even realise there was anything missing.
We got by with Pan & Scan for movies for years (although shots were presumably composed with an eye for this eventuality).
