Prepare to be filtered

Web filters will go further than adult content, says Open Rights Group.

Details obtained by digital freedom campaigner Open Rights Group claim that the block will extend into other content including violent material and smoking.

The group spoke to a number of internet service providers about the filter, discovering that the block could include nine other categories.

Extremist and terrorist-related content, anorexia and eating disorder websites and suicide-related websites are mentioned, as well as alcohol, web forums, esoteric material and web blocking circumvention tools.

Prepare to be behind the great wall of Britain where the only things visible on the web will be websites run by the government telling us how great they are.

That's not even an exaggeration.

Seriously though that is quite funny.
In a "you have to laugh or else you cry" kind of way? This has already gone too far for that. We're sleepwalking into a totalitarian society where the only freedom we have is within the increasingly rigid and narrow boundaries of what our rulers allow us - The right to defend yourself long since taken away for fear of thugs and criminals. Freedom of movement and association limited, extra surveillance and armed police on the streets for fear of terrorists. Freedom of speech limited and even more surveillance for fear of paedophiles. What's next? This whole damn country is already FUBAR.

If people are okay with living their lives under the gaze of the cameras where they constantly repeat the mantra "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" that's fine. But I'd like a goddamn "opt-out" of that, please. Which it looks increasingly like it's going to have to be leaving the country (because no-one here has the spirit, the balls or the weapons to fight an open revolt any more). Being forced to play by unjust rules is no way to live. There used to be grey areas where the clever people could bend and avoid them - Now it's only the rich people who are members of the ruling class or their chums and can buy them off. If authority becomes nigh-on omnipotent then there's very little difference in being forced to obey the laws of Britain or North Korea - You have to constantly watch what you're doing or saying all the time either way. I don't want to live in a constant state of paranoia, thanks.

Quite honestly, when I talk to friends of mine who live in other countries, the one thing I say that this country needs is a revolt. We need social upheaval - there is so much that is wrong with the country today, but we just sit by and take it. What the London riots shown was shown that only one thing is needed to create one - a spark. We need a spark to get the people on the streets.

In fact, the novel I'm working on at the moment has a very exact theme: "Everything I hate about 2013 England".

I just thought the idea of blocking esoteric stuff was funny, as it makes it look like the powers that be are worried about the "true" knowledge falling into too many people's hands. Thus fuelling my theory that there is a deliberate government conspiracy to keep the male population masturbating their power away...though I guess this same filter also throws a spanner in that one with the whole porn block, doesn't it? Damn. Though I think that's over David Cameron's head, only top level illuminati heads know about the masturbation agenda.

Seriously though, I do get the rest of what your saying. But if you were to move, were would you go to? Until they actually start preventing me from doing things I want to do, I wont start packing a suitcase. I agree, it is still worrying though.

@ Josh

And have you asked yourself why there isn't enough activism, protesting and upheaval? Too much masturbation.

 Now THAT gave me a chuckle. Thanks man.

Josh - If the miners and the unions couldn't manage it back in the 80s, what chance do the office workers and unemployed of today have? Britain is a "sit back and take it" kind of country. The peasant's revolt was a failure. The civil war just gave us an even worse government than before. We've learned the lesson that we just shouldn't try because we're doomed to fail.

As for where to go? Canada and New Zealand seem pretty consistent wrt civil liberties, as does the Netherlands and most Nordic countries. But even other EU countries don't take things to the extremes we do (which is why I think the EU plays a positive role in preventing our own rulers from simply implementing a police state - Please, EU, come and strike down our ****** laws). On my thousand mile drive across France I came across four speed cameras, two of which had been destroyed. I see that many in a ten-mile drive into town here. And then I'm surveyed by them as I walk around town, with the occasional verbal reminder that I'm being watched blared out over the speakers. Even if I haven't done anything illegal it just creates a climate of fear and paranoia that I'm really not comfortable with. If that same atmosphere descends on my home as well I don't think I can hack it here much longer.

you just watch this country is going to be a dictatorship and it'll be the rich that will control the poor, next there change us for the air we breath

Has anyone had any experience with these content filters as my Internet package is so old that I don't think they had even thought of them when I got it.

I seem to remember some kind of prove my age thing when I got my mobile account ages back but not really sure what that was going to block as I just phoned them up about it.

Would they block forums like this by default?

Impossibruuuuuuuuu

When there is a will, there will always be a way.

I'm not even bothered with the stupid blocks on life and fun that the morons in power try to instill. I'll happily sit back and use whatever means possible to continue to view/haunt this place.
