Postal Orders

Someone has messaged me asking if I accept Postal Orders or cheques on eBay.

I've never had experience with a Postal Order before and never had to cash a cheque before. This makes me a little nervous about getting cheated/tricked.

The Postal Order path seems the easiest way to go - I have a Post Office pretty much right next to where I live. But the one thing I'm worried about is proof of ID. I don't have a utility bill in my name for one reason or another, I don't drive, I've only been on holiday once as a kid (no passport). I think the requirement for proof of ID is a utility bill (pretty much just have my bank account statement) plus two other things, and I'm going to have a hard time proving I'm me if I need all that evidence. Would I be required to hand over a ton of ID to cash it? :|

Well all I can tell you is that I've used them a few times before and I've never been asked for any kind of proof of ID when exchanging them.

As far as I can work out (not very, truth be told), uncrossed POs are like money sent in cash - anyone can cash them. That makes it too risky, I'm guessing anyway. Crossed POs are a problem, too; they're like cheques.

This brings me to the other side of the issue: cheques. I have a bank account but have never, like I said, cashed a cheque. Never had the chance to. Since the cheque will be in my name and I have an account, surely I would just need to take the cheque to the counter and ask nicely...wrong? :/

Yes, that's how cheques work. Just instead of filling in the "cash" part of the paying in slip, you write the amount by where it says "cheque".

Who bothers with paying in slips these days? They'll print you a receipt and it's one less thing to have to fill in / cart around with you.

Cheques are easy, as long as the person sending them remembers to sign them... >_>
