Recently recovered from the wilds of darkest Edinburgh, it's...

Nakama Britannica X – Scotland Loves Anime 2012 (Almost Live!)

In a special bonus episode, we forgo social pleasantries such as research and preparation to bring you the low-down on SLA Edinburgh – a report so fresh, it was partially recorded in the Filmhouse bar! Sadly this lead to me not saying much in the first part, as I was convinced the middle-aged hard-man at the next table was about to tell us to shut up, but never mind. Stagger on.

01.45 Tokyo Marble Chocolate and Phoenix Wright. Contains no actual confectionary, nor objectionable content.

07.55 From Up On Poppy Hill and Mass Effect. Goro rides again, Production I.G. Lose their paragons.

15.35 After School Midnighters. SCIENCE!

23.45 Berserk and Berserk II: Berserk Harder. "I like swords!"

38.20 Nerawareta Gakuen. We attend a world premiere! Sadly, the world is not impressed.

55.40 The Anime Mirai Project. Juju the Weightless Spider Girl Who Pretended Not to See Buuta.

65.06 Wolf Children Ame and Yuki. In which I find out what the word "nadir" actually means.

83.46 Closing – Aria (Susumu Hirasawa)

iTunes soon!

Also, it's kinda a shame that VisisQueen didn't seem to like Nerawareta Gakuen, I thought if nothing else, the animation quality almost justified it alone? Does no one remember the several seconds on which the focus changes to the battery rolling across the floor? Clearly someone had budget to blow, if nothing else.
That is the equivalent of calling a video game good because of the graphics.

I didn't even think it looked that remarkable. The art was pretty bland and the overuse of special effects killed everything else.

What Maxon said. The animation was pretty at times, but overuse of sakura petals and streaming sunshine does not a plot or interesting characters make. At best Narewareta Gakuen is a lump of turd rolled in glitter.

Are you sure the middle-aged hard man wasn't there for the anime too?

Are you talking to me?
I'm not sure. Maybe?
Where is that ban button.....

To be honest I hadn't really noticed but then again, you didn't seem to like the film much in general. It's easier to look for flaws when you're actively doing so. I'd agree that Nerawareta Gakuen deserves a repeat watching, considering how popular the story is in Japan, I can't help but assume either everyone missed something that lay below the surface or it was genuinely a poor adaption and/or the source material is just as bad.
I'm sure the source material is good and not half confusing as the film is. The problem of this one is that on it's own it doesn't make sense and it is being sold as a standalone piece.

Either way, I thought a lot of fun was to be had after the movie, the sheer absurdity of the plot made for a good discussion, especially when it came to piecing everything together. Like the Grandfather's apparent death or the paper cups falling out the sky.
I'm all for picking up the pieces after watching a difficult film, but were you able to pick it all up? What's the purpose of conquering school? Why ban mobiles? How come at some point everyone was helping the "invader"?

I think I'd have been more offended if it wasn't as engaging right up to the last ten minutes where everything nose-dives into the ground but equally since it was a world premiere we were the first to see it. I think that adds some merit since there was no guarantee it would be any good.
.....
What?

I see. it's just that it doesn't matter if I'm the first or last person in the world to see something. It just doesn't add to the enjoyment for me.

The film does look good and I'm a Supercell fan, so that was also a plus for this film, but for me story is the most important thing on ANY film! The film's story was such a mess that the story was ruined all the good points of it for me. I'm convinced the original must be WAY better and I'm also sure that MAYBE, if I knew the original material, I'd get some enjoyment out f it.

BUT, as it was, I hated the film.
