Perfect Blue-ish?

Hi,

I was wondering if there were anymore anime horror movies in the same vien as Perfect Blue. Placing realism above overblown fights and monsters, PB is a great movie and really unsettling but seemingly a one off? Then again I don't know a thing about anime really, lol...

Over to you

It's actually more thriller than it is a horror movie, I love Perfect Blue, every time you watch it you can try and figure out all the different way the movie might fit together.

If you enjoyed that then I suggest Satoshi Kon's other films and his one series: Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Paranoia Agent.

If you want something in the same murder plot vein then I might suggest Monster....or at a push Jin-Roh.

Whichever way you look at it, Perfect Blue is definately a one-off. The only other film which come close are, as MrChom said, other Satoshi Kon films - but they aren't really horror.

However, Paranoia Agent (a 13 episode series rather than a film)is fairly disturbing and unsettling in a similar manner, and is probably the closest thing you will find to Perfect Blue.

Oh absolutely, it's a classic film that uses very unique ways to get plot across, and while the plot in other Satoshi Kon movies is vastly different there are some techniques that are shared. The art style is always vaguely the same, there's nearly always some form of misdirection as to what is really going on, most of the time he likes to blend reality with the contents of someone's head, and there's nearly always some kind of message for the viewer at some point in the film.

To my mind he's one of the finest directors out there, bar none. He never makes a duff film, and everything he touches seems to be absolutely spot on and where you would expect it to be. He's actually one of the few directors whose films I preorder on DVD blind, which should be a massive complement. It's just a shame that as a director of more "adult" animation he'll never see widespread western acclaim.
