Oscars '05 snub anime

The 2005 Oscar nominations have been published but unfortunately, no anime has made the final cut this year. Both Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Sky Blue (Korean animated film) had been in the running for 'Best Animated Film' nominations but have lost out to a trio of American CG films; The Incredibles, Shrek 2 and Shark Tale.

Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away won an Oscar in 2002 for 'Best Animated Film' and anime fans will now be hoping Miyazaki's next anime movie (Howl's Moving Castle) will make a similiar impact at next year's awards.

To be honest, I was expecting this; but still it boggles the mind how Shark Tale and even Shrek 2 received nominations ahead of ambitous and original efforts like Innocence.

Satoshi Kon should have won an Oscar last year for Millenium Actress too.

Oh well, this just goes to show how $$$ talks in this category.

its amazing that spirited away did so well in 2003 really. not like the oscars mean jack **** anyway. when people like richard burton glen close, kubrick, hitchcock so many fne actors, actresses and directors lose out to some truly shoddy crap its not a surprise that intelligent and stunning anime gets sidelined in one of the less dazzling catagories.

but really sharks tale? that was truly ****. the animation was poor compared to the other cg features up the award. the script was drivel. the acting poor. incredibles has got to walk away with this award.

the cynic in me says "that doesn't surprise me." 'the incredibles' and 'shrek 2' i can understand, what with them being very good by hollywood CG film standards, but 'shark tale' has been panned as a piss-poor imitation of 'finding nemo'. it really does baffle me how they decide what's good and what isn't. but, as otaku_kei pointed out, the oscars don't mean jack **** really. here's hoping 'howl...' will clean up next year, eh?

Was it eligible? I don't remember hearing anything about it being in the running...

I think Dreamworks afforded Millenium Actress a very limited US cinema run in 2003, so technically, I guess it was eligible but I doubt it even got as far as Innocence in terms of the prelimary shortlist.

A real shame too, Kon is consistently showing how talented a director he is; Magnetic Rose (from Memories), Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and now Paranoia Agent all seem to be of the outstanding variety.

I thought it was the fella behind wolfs rain that did he magnetic rose segment of memories?

I knew someone would pull me up for this ;) Kon wrote the script but didn't direct it. Still, it's worth sticking on your CV. 'Magnetic Rose' is fantastic.

What a crock of ****. A Shark's Tale? Just because it's there, doesn't mean it should get a nomination. My blood boils.

Indeed. "Shark's Tale" getting a nomination is probably the lowest of the low, regardless of the competition.

Wonder how much was paid to get that nominated?

Still, most Oscar's (most being the key word here) are awarded to peeps who don't deserve them. Its just a chane for people to swim in their own effluence and enhance their careers. :D

the good news is, the oscars aren't really worth taking seriously. the bad news is, quite a few people in the industry think they are.
