Opinions on these series please...

I wanna get into a few new series so on a whim I bought Niea_7 simply because it's by the creator of Lain. Here's a list of some other series/movies i'm interested in and I would be grateful for peoples opinions on what to get next.

Haibane Renmei
Blue Gender
Steamboy
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Madlax
Gantz

Any other series recommendations would be nice too. ¦D
 
I'm a big fan of Madlax, its not for everyone, slow paced and not for all and some consider the action to far fetched. But I really love it one of my all time favourites. More information in This thread.
 
Haibane Renmei is an excellent series from start to finish; I really can't recommend it enough (but there's no point me typing a long spiel seeing as you can just check the positive reviews on this site).

Madlax has been a bit hit and miss for me so far, there are points where I've felt bored, but then the story takes a turn for a better and I'm paying attention again (and I can't fault the animation and music). Noir is certainly the better of the two series for me.

As for Gantz, I've only seen vol 1 so far but it didn't really click with me, the violence just seems unnecessary and the pacing is a bit too slow, a problem I'm told continues through the rest of the series.
 
I`m considering buying The Irresponsible Captain Tylor box set at the moment but don`t know much about it to really recommend it. Blue Gender is not a series I would recommend personnally I saw the first two video's when it first came out on vhs in this country was not to impressed by it.

If you like Nior which was a brillant series I would go for Madlax and Haibane Renmei is a good show but a bit to slow in development for my liking.

As for Gantz if you like blood and gore I think this will be a show for you but only seen first dvd.
 
Haibane Renmei is a series I'd certainly highly recommend, especially if you enjoy quiet, thoughtful series, of the style Abe specializes in; out of the selections you list, i'd recommend this the most.

Blue Gender I haven't seen, but I'm certainly going to watch after the Halloween article.

Steamboy was a good film in my opinion, although the best part of it was clearly the setting and the animation - the story could have benefitted from being extended.

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor I likewise haven't seen, but I may have to have a look into it now I know of its existance.

Madlax, I feel, is like an inferior version of Noir, without the tight plot and sparse-but-necessary cast, but it's still worthy of a watch.

Gantz is marred by having a much, much better manga, but apart from that it's a gore-fest that doubles as a tale of morality, character studies and an eerie atomosphere.
 
Can I prematurely recommend Haibane Renmei? I'm only halfway through, but its surpassed Lain with its dreamy melancholy stance, and its even dragged my girlfriend in. Now thats good watchin.
 
I'm going to have to join the clamour for recommending Haibane - it's not only one of my fave series of 2005, but one of the best pieces of anime I've ever seen! It's probably the closest of Abe's stuff to Niea_7 from what I've heard. Sadly the last disc isn't out until next January... :(

But it's out in the US. 8D I don't buy region 2 DVD's released by MVM anyway.

I think i'll get Haibane Renmei next from what you guys have said and what little i've read about it.

Any other series/movies I didn't list that I might wanna look into?
 
If you like 'headscratcher' stuff, try Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue or Paranoia Agent if you haven't done so already. They don't quite match Lain in that department but not much can tbh!

Steamboy on the other hand doesn't require deep thought but it looks awesome. 8)

I have seen parts of Perfect Blue and it did look rather good, I might pick it up if I see it cheap.

Paranoia Agent i'm not too sure about, when i first heard about it I thought 'Neat, i'm gonna have to check this out' but both trailers I've seen for it put me right off.
 
I've just finished watching Irresponsible Captain Tylor - last night infact :D I really enjoyed it, it's very silly, very amusing and above all very entertaining. It's one of those series where you don't need to think, or worry about why everything that happens is so stupid, because it's meant to be that way!
As it was made in 1993, the character design is quite simplistic, but typical of that time (kinda reminds me a little of Dominion Tank character design). There are no amazing special effects, but still I was impressed with the animation quality considering it's age. The characters are all great fun and after episode 26 finished last night, I was left with a real "feel good" feeling, all warm and happy ^_^
If you like space operas that aren't serious, but totally silly, with a guy who appears to be a useless lump, but just maybe he isn't, drunken doctors, spies, a guy who has girl phobia and some of the ugliest crew members of a space ship you'll ever see, then you probably would enjoy this. I highly recommend it anyway ^_^
I'm getting the OVA that due out this month as well and I do recommend you go for the Captain Tylor R1 boxset I bought, as you get 4 DVDs, an OST, 2 DVDs full of extras and 2 hardback books all in the box, which is also really nice and very different, as it's about 2/3rds the size of a normal DVD boxset box! (Well worth the £45 I paid ^_^).

Well said, everything just seemed to hapen for no apparent reason and then get a brief explination that didn't really explain much later on. But the animation was a treat.

I agree with Chomolungma, the manga is far superior, but it hasn't been licensed yet unfortunately.
 
Thanks guys, i just ordered the region 1 Haibane Renmei box set off of amazon.co.uk and I managed to pick up Perfect Blue at MVC for £2.99(how could I resist).

From what Miaka-chan said I'll probably get the Tylor Ultra box set next week(i've seen it for £35).
