Seconded. Place Promised... is well worth a purchase - Shinkai's films are all the more essential since he's such an original talent. I have this one on preorder! :D

Eureka Seven is another that I've had my eye on for a while...didn't realise volume #1's release date had passed me by without realising!

I keep hearinf really good things about The Place Promised in our Early Days and i've considered buying it over and over but alway put off by the fact that I thought that Voices of a Distant Star was pretty dire. A round of drinks for the guy doing it all himself but looking at it as just an animated short film it is just a waste of 25 minutes.

Last chance... do I decide to go for it or just leave it be. I've heard somebody compare it in some ways to the atmosphere and feel of Haibane Renmei(one of my favourite series) and that kinda makes me want to see it...

It's quite hard to sum up (ignore the Miyazaki comparisons, which are wholly innacurate) but it does have some similarities with Haibane in that there are some gorgeous backgrounds and a strong character-driven theme of friendship and suchlike running through the middle of it. There are one or two sci-fi elements too but beyond that I can't say anything that won't spoil it.

One thing it has over Voices... is the running time, which means the characters and story have enough time to develop more fully.

It's not that bad, the ending is awesome, well, what happens to them all is really suprising.

I doubt it, if you can't give away a tootsie pop. ;[
