NieA_7

Has anyone one seen any of this series? For those who’ve never heard of it, NieA_7 (or NieA Under 7) is a 13 episode 2002 production from (more or less) the same staff as Serial Experiments Lain, most notably Yoshitoshi ABe. It features a hard-up Tokyo student (Mayuko) who finds a freeloading alien (NieA) living in her closet.

With it featuring a human, a bath house and an alien it actually sounds a lot like the premise of the more recent UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. In fact, one of the alien princess’ that appears in that show actually takes up residence in a closet too.

I’ve read three reviews, one positive, one neutral and one negative. I just wondered if anyone here has any opinions of it. I quite fancy seeing it as ABe’s works, especially Haibane Renmei, are high quality. It’s just seems odd that this one appears to be virtually unknown.

Yeah Ive always wanted to see this.
Big fan of Abe`s here.
I remember hearing that its more lighthearted than most of his works but with the odd serious undertone.

If anyonoe has any opinions on this Id also love to hear them.

Hmm, I've seen part of it.

Firstly, it's very different from other series that ABe's been involved in.

In essence, it's a slice-of-life comedy series. As far as I watched, there wasn't really any plot to speak of - each episode is essentially standalone.

Personally, the comedy didn't do much for me beyond the odd flicker of a smile, but something I really did like about the series was the atmosphere - I guess that's why it's often referred to as an iyashi anime.

Actually later in the series it has a feel similar to that of Haibane Renmei and is strong on the character interaction.

I'm not gonna say much because I'm in a hurry but I enjoyed it a lot and although it's not as polished as other series ABe has been involved in I think I goes down as one of my favourites.

I got as far as the first half and really enjoyed it - the comedy is quite 'gentle', in an inoffensive and sweet kind of way. It's a sitcom with a sci-fi twist I suppose.

I really ought to get the second two discs sharpish, what with Geneon's troubles and all.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting any replies to my post so cheers for the thoughts everyone. There were some nice positives there, seeing as I like a bit of ‘slice of life with some gentle humour’ anime. It always provides me with quite a ‘feel-good’. Particularly encouraging is the likening of the atmosphere to Haibane Renmei.

So, I think I’ll get these, especially if it’s a Geneon title on the endangered species list.

I've just finished this sereis and I must say it's great.

I think it deserves the title of Most laid back series of all times. I can't think of any other series that gets even close to the levels of laid backness of Niea_ 7.

The first episode and the competition bathhouse are my favourites.

Also, having Chada's style consultant instead of the next episode thing was so weird and funny.

Yeah, I love this show. Niea_7 can be enjoyed on two levels: it's a serene slice-of-life comedy, but it's also about loneliness, uncertainty, and nostalgia.
I get the nostalgia and uncertainty, but the loneliness bit didn't stand out to me, besides that go-con episode. But there is plenty of room for Mayuko and Genzo to develop a relationship (if they ever do).

It's funny how the series go from here to nowhere, but it's still enjoyable.

That episode is mostly what I'm thinking of. But it seems to me that her obvious lack of self-confidence and the way she struggles to relate to other people makes her feel lonely and depressed. I need to rewatch this now!

Go and do that! It's a great series that felt so good I wish it lasted a bit longer.

It was a bit of a surprise from ABe (One of my fave people in anime for Lain and Haibane) but it was still extremely good, in a really odd way. It does the 'madcap slice of life' thing in a slightly different way and it works pretty well all told. Probably my least fave ABe, but then again, it has some pretty steep competition 8)
