Production I.G's sci-fi drama <em><strong>The Sky Crawlers</strong></em> (the latest anime film to be directed by <em>Mamoru Oshii</em> (<em>Ghost in the Shell</em>, <em>Innocence</em>)) <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117991789.html?categoryId=1050&cs=1">has been licensed</a> for a US release (amongst many other countries, excluding Europe) by Sony Pictures. Nothing was said of a European release.
In other State-side anime licensing news, <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/company/204/funimation-entertainment">Funimation</a> have continued their 2008 rampage by <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-09-08/funimation-licenses-kaze-no-stigma">scooping up Gonzo's <em><strong>Kaze no Stigma</strong></em></a>, a 24 episode light-hearted action series that aired in Japan during 2007. Given the currently <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1741/revelation-films-delay-releases-until-2009">uncertain state</a> of Funimation's anime distribution in the UK, it remains to be seen whether or not the likes of <em>Kaze no Stigma</em> will even be released in the UK at all.

No interest in either but congratulations to any who were hoping for them. The more anime the better; even if it doesn't relieve me of my money this time.

I'm really looking forward to the Sky Crawlers - if it doesn't get a UK release I'll probably end up importing it anyway. From what little I've heard about it so far, it's supposed to be Oshii's most character-driven and accessible movie so far. *fingers crossed*

I'm sure someone will release Sky Crawlers over here in good time... Prime suspects being either Manga Ent. or Optimum, even still, it's probably my most anticipated anime right now and I'm dying to see it, so importing might be an option. I've been looping the soundtrack for the last week and enjoying it so much; Kenji Kawai is right up there with Yoko Kanno, Taku Iwasaki and Joe Hisashi as my favourite composer. His music is spell-binding.

Considering that GitS, his most famous movie, had little to none, that would be impressive. The only character development in that was Motoko wanting more, and even that was badly done.

Going on GitS, I'll probably hate it.

I'm with Paul on this. Sky Crawlers has to be the only decent anime to come out of Japan this year. But seeing as Sony has got their hands on it we've no chance of viewing here in R2. Still waiting for Blood+.

Right with you there, I've been listening to the GitS OST's recently and he's done some of the most atmospheric soundtracks out there.

Have you seen Oshii's earlier Patlabor movies Aion? They have a greater focus on character development than his later work. They manage to be philosophical without sacrificing attention to characters and their personalities. May be worth a look, even if you didn't like GitS 1 and 2.
