New UK internet laws: How will it affect us?

Hi everyone :)

I recently became aware of some new law passing here in the UK that will let ISP's send you a warning letter when using any type of P2P programing. Now I only use bittorrent for downloading anime. Are people like me going to have to stop? Or do you think its empty threats?

Just been discussing with a friend and a bit worried about it all.

Dave =)

Well if there's nothing illegal about the programs themselves, it's hard to see how it could be enforced, as they could be used for entirely legal purposes.

The only way I think they could stop you using P2P software is to spy on you and prove you've been sharing copyrighted material. I think that's what happened not so long ago in Japan - but there it was only very prolific uploaders who were arrested. Downloading a few gigs a week isn't likely to arrouse any suspicion.

Nah mon dont worry. People will never stop. Look at the sheer amount of people downloading, you REALLY think ISPs are gonna tell them all to stop??

Also, only certain ISPs are taking part, so if yours is one, and has a go at you, just move to one that isnt taking part. I made a thread about it in Random Chit-Chat- with a link to say which ISPs are taking part.

Dont worry 8) 8)

no worries, I'm just mentioning as you might loose a few insights from there. As Ayase said, you have to be really prolific to raise a few heads...

But a few gigs a week? I barely get a few gigs a month.. :p

actually to get technically, there isn't a law, it's just an agreement, it only effects heavy downloaders, and it seems to only cover mp3's not video files

Basicly the Uk record companies put up "plant" files and by offering them on a client they can see which IPs access them. While there is no agreement with the video side of entertainment they will probably come aboard anyway. There are of course multiple ways around all this, which can be easily found using a search engine.

A few gigs per week? I do that in a single night at times.

I only DDL most songs (not that I download a lot), so I'm not bothered.

I think we all know how you feel about fansubs by now Kireek.

I'm not a fan either, however there are certain things which I dl fansubs of (Dirty Pair TV, Gundam ZZ etc.) because I think if they haven't been officially subbed for over 20 years they aren't likely to be. I'd like to continue to be able to do that.

I must admit i download practically EVERYTHING, Anime, games, music, films and i practically download stuff every day! But surely this would only work if the ISP saw you downloading the extension, i.e, .mp3 or .zip? Because i tend to download everything from bit torrent encrypted, so surely they wont be able to see that traffic?...right?

There are ways but they take up some resources. File extensions are a windows invention, you can tell a file format by other means.

I've virtually downloaded nothing in the last year or so. I like to have a physical product and I'm way behind with the things I want to watch / buy.
I do agree with Ayase on dl hard to find / OoP stuff. I've wanted Get Smart since forever and I've downloaded it, now it's coming out I'm sure to get my pawns on a copy =)
