Oban Star Racers, a Japanese and French co-production with an opening theme by Yoko "Cowboy Bebop" Kanno, also started airing on Jetix this week and can be seen everyday at 17:30, followed by Shaman King at 18:00.

STOP telling people about Naruto on Jetix if people see that awful re-edited version they'll never give anime a chance lol

Oban and Shaman King rock though

Jetix advertise Naruto, it'll never work.

Shaman King was good, though lacks, only if it had a real ending. v_v

I don't know how Jetix are going to deal with some of these episodes if they want to make it suitable for Mormons...

Although its been a while since I saw the Forest of Death section of Naruto - a lot of what Gaara does is either hidden behind sand or implied. The "emotional" and shocking violence in Naruto reaches its peak during the climax of the Zabuza arc, everything after that is fairly tame LotR-style PG/12A material. I suppose this is why Jetix have moved its timeslot forward from 8PM to 6.30PM; in terms of mainstream appeal, its a better timeslot for the kids too.

Again, I really don't see why. Full Metal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain have done a lot more good and that's on an obscure channel.

Based on what...? I doubt that Rapture reaches more new anime fans than Jetix, in terms of viewing figures I'm sure Naruto is doing better on a bigger channel. In terms of building fandom, the potential of FMA and WR (being on a niche channel) is obviously limiting compared with Disney's Jetix franchise.

Logically, Naruto is probably hitting more viewers than any other anime airing in the UK right now - give or take Pokemon and other random card game franchises.

Based on the fact that i've actually heard people around college talking about Wolf's Rain(mainly) and FMA. Some people even approached me to talk about Wolf's Rain in my art class(Nobody really seems to like Mezzo though). And this is because "dun dun dun", they saw it on Rapture. Only one person mentioned Naruto to me and just passed it off as "another crappy Dragonball Z type show". Naruto is probably getting a bigger following with kids. Raptures shows are appealing more to the 16 to mid 20s age group which is actually what we want for the UK. The more people that reconise it as a mature medium the better.

Naruto on Jetix just looks like another kids fighting show. Nothing new there.

That's interesting; no one I know has even heard of Rapture, let alone watched the anime on there. Meh... Looking purely at numbers Naruto is the biggest anime franchise in the world right now for a reason, it isn't "just another fighting anime" and as a "family" show it will interest parents as well as kids. Building up anime fans from childhood is a better way too - the majority of people on this forum are fans through discovering say Pokemon or DBZ.

Also, here are some more statistics picked up on this very site:

SEPTEMBER 2006 ANIME KEYWORDS
1. "naruto" (125 searches)
2. "KARAS" (108 searches)
3. "full metal alchemist" (101 searches)
4. "ghost in the shell" (96 searches)
5. "gantz" (62 searches)

AUGUST 2006 ANIME KEYWORDS
1. "naruto" (172 searches)
2. "KARAS" (116 searches)
3. "full metal alchemist" (99 searches)
4. "ghost in the shell" (91 searches)
5. "gantz" (84 searches)

JULY 2006 ANIME KEYWORDS
1. "naruto" (96 searches)
2. "full metal alchemist" (55 searches)
3. "gantz" (50 searches)
4. "ghost in the shell" (49 searches)
5. "KARAS" (49 searches)

These are facts and are based on what's popular with UK anime fandom i.e. what people are searching for on Anime UK News more than anything else. Naruto is constantly top because people are interested.

Internet statistics are different from actual people talking about it in a public place just out of common interest. Those people could be searching about Naruto from anywhere in the world. I wouldn't really call them hard facts.

I'm always baffled as to why Gantz is always on those...

At the end of day, the majority of our visitors (which I can also back-up with hard stats) are from the UK. These are hard facts based on recorded public information. I publish this chart every month just so everyone can gauge what's truly popular with UK anime fans.

You can learn a lot about fandom just by running a site, I try to track everything possible. Our most popular reviews of the last 60 days have been:

1. Naruto - #1
2. Ikki Tousen (Battle Vixens) #4
3. Gunslinger Girl #3
4. Saikano (She, The Ultimate Weapon) #2
5. My-HiME #1

You wouldn't expect Ikki Tousen to be up there but the fan service factor is obviously a big pull to anime fans. As for Gantz - it has sex, violence and everything else... Joe Public aren't really interested in something like Planetes or Haibane Renemi and I think the reason why Naruto is so successful compared with what else is popular amongst "the mainstream" is because it actually has an involving story with exciting action and empathetic characters. I mean it hooked me into anime fandom.

I'll trust the words of actual people I meet rather than internet statistics. I'm a traditional kind of guy in that way. :)

But then that's hardly a basis of judging what's successful in the UK industry. I wouldn't particularly trust the opinions of a few random individuals compared with statistics collected from over 1,000 UK residents. I know this bloke at work who enjoys Zero no Tsukaima, but I wouldn't put that on UK TV.

The internet is misleading and innacurrate at best. Some of those people might only be looking for download links for the series. You don't know.

And this is a case of they saw the show on the TV and they became interested in it enough to buy the DVD's or at least talk about it in general conversation. That situation with the guy at your workplace is totally different. He didn't see it on TV and become interested.

I know the trends of my users :)

Even if they are looking for downloads, they are 90% UK fans searching for Naruto. More people are searching for Naruto than FMA. That suggests UK fandon is interested in Naruto. Accept these facts. Even if this is some bizarre anomaly attributed to just Anime UK News, we then have to factor in Naruto's popularity around the rest of the world, the fact it was the most expensive license in the world, the fact it still is the most popular fansub in the world.

I get what you're saying - that the UK needs more sophicated anime. I support that, but such shows are undeniably niche interests - even in Japan. They fit well on a niche channel like Rapture, but would struggle on a big buck franchise like Jetix. Past examples include CNX and the Sci-Fi channel. We need a "gateway" series, and Naruto is exactly that.

Sorry but I still disagree. Yes, I think we do need more mature shows but also shows that have more of a mainstream interest(like Stand Alone Complex for example) because I feel that all Naruto is going to do on Jetix is draw in a bunch of kids. I wouldn't choose a show like Renmei(A sjow which I adore) for television and I would be a bit worried if Rapture chose to air it because I don't think it would go down well with the average TV watcher. A lot of anime is aimed at ages 16 to mid 20's and I think that's the age group we need to be pushing.

I guess I could go on but I have a Jackie Chan movie I want to watch before it gets too late. So in the name of Jackie Chan, let's just agree to disagree. :p
