A new anime TV series based on the 1973 vintage super-sentai classic Casshern is underway in Japan and set to be broadcast during the autumn of 2008 with animation by Madhouse. This will be the third remake of Casshern, the other two being the 1993 OVA series "Casshan: Robot Hunter" and the big-budget live action blockbuster of 2004 (of same name); both of which happen to be out on UK DVD.

I really liked the movie too, but I know a lot of people who didn't. I'm probably going to watch it this weekend, I just feel like refreshing my opinion on it because it's probably the best looking (non-anime) sci-fi to come out of Japan for a long time now.

As for Madhouse, stay tuned, I've got a load of stuff written up. They are going into overdrive for 2008.

I haven't seen any of the older Casshern movies only the 2004 one. Should make an interesting anime, I just hope they give it a better ending.

Still as you say Paul, Madhouse really do seem to be in overdrive. Two film adaptations on the cards. Perhaps their trying to move into the world market more?

Thought the movie was ok, it had some great action which I hope Madhouse will transfer into the anime. I'm sure they will :D

The film went a bit too far with the anti war message at the end.

As for Madhouse going into overdrive, well thats fantastic been a favourite of mine for a long time now (its the detail they go into), hopefully most if not all of it will be good.

I was amazed by 2004 the film, which makes me eager to see the new animated series as i feel it is a more stylish and definately timeless format.

I was glad to notice an appreciation of Samurai Jack (Genndy Tartakovsky's very stylish masterpiece, which i'm sure was never finished properly) enjoying influences in the main fight scene during the middle of the film against the massive android army, one screenshot in particular where Casshern cuts right down ones centre in the same slow motion and i'm sure using the exact sound sample.
Also to point out a couple of inflences from the Bleach series soundtrack made me smile.
Tho slightly confused at some points to whats actually going on, the underlying subtle meanings to the film are quite nicely concluded at the end bringing ones sense of hope and unity with whats good about life and our world.

The live-action movie was impressive visually, but plot-wise it was a bit of a mess. I've yet to see a truly bad Madhouse show though, so I'm hopeful that their magic touch will rub off on Casshern too. The idea of them 'going into overdrive' for 2008 is exciting news indeed!
