New Anime Releases 26/11/2012

There's a DVD?

(On a budget this month due to incoming WiiU so holding off on getting that sexy steelbook for now)

Why do I suspect that no-one on this site is going to dare admit they plan to get just the DVD of Ninja Scroll?
I don't think there are that many regular posters here, and from all the discussions we've had on the format over the last few of years I'm pretty sure most of them now have the capacity to play BDs. And for those who don't, I'd like to think an anonymous message board of mostly decent folk wouldn't be a place where they'd feel unable to admit that. Have we done anything to foster a BD elitist attitude?

Ninja Scroll steelbook came today. it's really nice. Amazon went overboard with the packaging though......

On the topic of the Wii U, I'm getting mine friday. GAME phoned up today to ask if I wanted to attend a midnight launch, but i'm out that night already so Friday morning will do :)

I'd have thought a DVD-only devotee would have likely bought a previous version of Ninja Scroll already (I already had it myself) and upgrading a DVD to DVD is not such an advantage. The DVD version will probably appeal most to fans who either see it on a shelf, or those who hadn't yet got around to upgrading their VHS, I'd imagine.

Nothing for me this week (still no region B player and I lost the plot with Naruto ages ago).

I'll get the Ninja Scroll Steelbook sometime soon, saving pennies for Christmas!

Still not able to get into Naruto so I'll pass on that one.

In terms of DVD vs BD, the only time I have bought a local DVD over a local BD release was Supernatural. Mainly because I only own the first 2 seasons so far, they are both pre-2008 and the blu-ray cost about double the price of the DVD. Of course, before I owned a BD player, I bought the DVDs, but aside from Shakugan no Shana, I haven't felt the need to upgrade (and only reason I did was so it would match my season 2 when I get it).

I've gone super behind with the shonen shows. I keep up with the story, but in terms of buying stuff. A good 3-4 volumes behind on Naruto's manga, 10 on Bleach and with the DVDs...SOOOOOOOO behind that I'll probably never catch up.

Unlikely. It's still selling pretty strongly as a medium and considering over 1 billion players had been sold by 2011 combined with the low cost required for production, it's not going to go anywhere anytime soon.
That's what people said about VHS.

Eventually, someone will take the plunge and stop producing DVDs - that's when things will change. Knowing consumer capitalism and it's planned obsolescence, I'm just surprised that process is taking so long. It isn't really constructive to the adoption of Blu-ray by consumers to have the two formats still running side-by-side like this.

No interest in Naruto, never seen Ninja Scroll so I will buy the old DVD second hand for a few quid just to see if I like it before investing in a Steelbook. Not that I have any spare cash right now anyway, its all reserved for the new Batman and Bourne films next week. BluRay steelbook versions of course.

The difference between DVD and BD isn't as cut and dry as VHS and DVD, and I know we were still on VHS for a long time. My first DVD player was second hand and while I have a PS3, blu-ray player and 1920x1200 monitor, neither my parents or my sister have a blu-ray player or full HD TV.

I personally think more people will adopt Blurays when more computers are capable of playing them. I personally only had a laptop as my means of playing media for a long time, and it could only play DVDs so that's what I bought.

I would buy the DVD version if I had an interest in the movie.

As for BD discussion, my DVD player was brought last year so i'm not going to consider upgrading. More so when I don't feel I will benefit from upgrading so soon.

Maybe in the future, when there are more BDs about. ~
