who has seen Nausicaa of the valley of the wind or have read the manga? It is an awesome film and the manga is brilliant. I am a huge fan of the studio ghibli films and have got all the films on dvd.

I didn't like it. The only Ghibli films I enjoyed were Laputa(though I hated that pirate gang led by that old woman) and Grave of the Fireflies. Spirited Away was so bad I took it back to the shop the next day. Really not my kind of movie.

I may check out Only Yesterday though.

Hmm, i have watched most of them, and though they are good, they are not in my top 10 anime.

I think they are famous, and to an extent good, because they are approachable by people new to anime, and have pretty clear stories which dont need much thinking about afterwards.

To say they are in general the Disney of anime, is probably pretty close...

More over-rated than [enter uber popular Shounen Jump series here]

I thought Laputa [subbed] was a masterpiece and so was Nausciáá though Mononoke is Nausciáá but with more questions answered.

Every Ghibli film I've watched has been great! I think I'd say The Cat Returns was my favorite. Spirited Away, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service were all awesome too! I haven't seen Laputa, Monoke or Nausicaa yet, but they are definately films that are on my "must see" list!

I consider most of the ones I've watched to be pretty enjoyable. Nausicaa was quite good to watch, the ending was classically epic. Wasn't sure if I'd like it to begin with but it turned out good. Laputa was good too, especially towards the end.

Hmmm.... I seem to like endings for some reason.

Seen near enough all of his films aside from the cat returns and my neighbours the yamadas i think......might have missed some others too.

Mononoke, Naussica and Toroto sit firmly in my top 10-20 anime of all time with kiki's delivery service hovering around that area too (it was one of my first animes). Totoro is there just because of the characters (the bus stop scene is the very definition of classic) and Naussica and Monoke for some really classic storytelling - covering some very important and usually "depressing issues" in a way that both young and old can enjoy them.

I gotta agree with some of the others about the hype on spirited away. I suppose i can see why people view it as great but, in my view his other films like Mononoke, Naussica and Tozzer give you so much more. It is certainly the most Disney like of his films which is probably why i dislike it.

I haven't seen that many, but I wasn't especially taken with them. The Nausicaa manga, on the other hand, was awesome - they really shouldn't've tried to squash the story into a movie, if it'd been a 13 episode series I think it'd be much more well thought of.

The film is really, really good...in my top 10 possibly.

The manga is in a different league - for the second time today (which is a bit spooky) I'm in agreement with Ramadahl, with the alternative recommendation of maintaining the visual quality by making it the most awesome seven part OAV ever.

The reason why the Manga is so much better than the anime, is because most of it was written after the movie was released. Miyazaki did the Manga only because he had to do it to get the movie made, but having started it he took it in a different direction and eventually finished it, but as a result only the beginning of it is actually in the movie. The film is still very good, but it's completely overshadowed as a result. Of course, the fact that he covered the same themes over a decade later in Princess Mononoke with better results doesn't help either.

I think I've yet to watch Nausicaa. Laputa was great, so was Grave Of The Fire Flies. Spirited away was ok...and I didn't think much of Howl's Moving Castle.
