My MELONPAN, I can't believe I found it!

Sorry for the crappy pictures, I'm a camera noob and this wasn't my camera.

ANYHOW!

As the Japan Centre (just outside Picadilly Circus tube station) was revamped a few months ago, they added a fresh bread section that up until the last time I went (Saturday) didn't have melonpan, or at least I didn't see it (after scouring the shop every single time I've been!).
But yes, this time they had some, and I still can't get over it.

Seriously, this is what PURE AWESOME AND WIN tastes look. Plus, Shana eats it so it's a win-win situation (not that it's possible to lose such a situation).

So yeah, as for what it's made out of, it was pretty much to a tee what I read it was like. It's made up of brioche type bread for the most part with a cookie-dough crust. Apparently it's cooked so the cookie-dough is just undercooked a bit so it's soft and juicy, which was pretty much exactly what this was like. Of course then it's sprinkled with sugar on the top so it's just like eating a huge piece of sugar bread, and I LOVE IT!!!
The chocolate one on the bottom was amazing too, crunchy topping. Only thing I didn't find was one that actually tasted like melon (like some supposedly do), so maybe next time they will expand their range because I checked back later in the day and it had all gone, so it must be pretty popular.

So basically, spread the word about melonpan!! And head down to the Japan Centre, it's like heaven, Japan style. Oh and the restaurant is made of pure win also. I ate a bowl of spicy ramen noodles and it was DELICIOUS!!

*overjoyed*

That brings back memories!!! Thanks for posting that xD

melonpan and lamen? I might pay a visit to japan centre. Let's see if I'm able to find amazing lamen as stated...
=)

Doesn't it look like a brain though? lol Zombies infiltrate AUKN!

I've never tried Melonpan, but I like my Hedgehog/Tiger bread (which both suit me. I have spikey hair and my Chinese Zodiac is the Tiger.)

Looks tasty. How much does it cost BTW? The Japan Centre seems to be quite pricey. The sake section downstairs is pretty impressive these days though...they must've had some serious refurbishment in the last few months.

I think it was just over £1.50 a piece (though they're large!). I find the prices reasonable enough to be honest, I always stock up on sweets and savoury every time I go :p

I only found the tea and sake shop on Saturday actually, they moved the restaurant to another building, I didn't even see it the first time (after the refurbishment) I went, I thought they got smaller. The book section is huge now too, like half a wall full of manga/artbooks (Japanese versions).

Because I shamelessly want my thread to be viewed and for people to embrace melonpan with all their hearts; I'll add that I bought a grand total of 4 more melonpan's today, and they're just delicious! *yum*

I also bought some carbonated orange juice (which doesn't have any real orange juice in it at all), some Ramune 'pills' (they taste like lemonade but are in tablets), Apple Tea, Peach Tea and Apple with Jasmine (which tastes like flower juice O_O).

I want this to turn into a Japanese food appreciation thread. That or it'll just sink down to the depths of history.

lol :) now, I'm feeling like having one myself... do they have castella as well?

I googled castella because I've never heard of it, and it looks pretty nice. I didn't see any in the Japan Centre though. They have tons of different types of bread, I can't tell what the flavours are though, because they list the entire thing as bread.

I found another shop called "Nippon and Korea Centre", which has some refrigerators with desserts in. It had rice cakes, not sure about castella though.
