My-HiME turned out to be better than my initial impressions which was a nice relief. At first it seemed like your everyday action series, with guaranteed kinky moments as the creative team saw fit to put Mai Tokiha's special birthmark on her breast. I usually don't need an excuse to look at someone's cleavage but putting that there really isn't helping me quit my perverted ways.
Now when it comes to animation I'm quite picky, as I just can't stand watching something that looks wrong. I shouldn't be one to talk, but sometimes I watch something and say to myself 'Damn, this guy needs to learn how to draw'. My-HiMEs visuals are nothing to applaud at, but I've seen worse so I eventually learned to get over it. The music however is great, and I expect nothing less from the lovely Yuki Kajiura who also composed the soundtracks for other anime such as Elemental Gelade and Noir.
The plot reminded me of the time I watched Chrono Crusade. It starts out pretty slow, making you wonder if you should even bother watching the rest of what initially seems like a mediocre series. Then things get heated up, people you thought were awesome are dying left, right and centre; and you begin to eagerly anticipate the next episode. Unfortunately, My-HiME couldn't emotionally smack me like some anime have. Although I felt very sad for the lifeless characters I had grown to like, it never got to the point where I was shedding tears.
Ultimately, I believe My-HiME is a series worth watching for genre veterans. If you're like me and enjoy watching anything as long as it's enjoyable; you'll come to realise that there are better things you've yet to see when compared to this anime. So I guess My-HiME fell short from becoming another Chrono Crusade for me, and instead it found itself sitting next to series' such as Fate / Stay Night.
