Today is the day before Christmas and UK anime distributor has decided to give us loyal fans an early Christmas present with their latest podcast, where they announced three new titles that will be coming to the UK market next year!

The first of which is the ecchi fantasy series HighSchool DxD which centres on Issei Hyodo, a "normal" human ("normal" in that he is a raging pervert). When Issei is attacked and left for dead by a fallen angel. The next morning, he wakes up to find third-year student Rias Gremory lying naked in bed, who reveals herself as the devil who saved his life, so as such, she is his new master. A second season of the original 2012 anime aired this past summer. MangaUK will be releasing HighSchool DxD on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2014.

The second new license is the comedic The Devil Is A Part-Timer, which aired in Japan back in Spring. When the Demon Lord and one of his generals escape the Demon World and enters modern day Tokyo, they end up taking human forms and in order to survive, the Demon Lord takes up a part-time job at a fast food restaurant but things get more complicated when the Demon Lord meets a girl, who turns out to be the hero he left the Demon World to escape! The series will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray next year.

The third and final announcement is the romantic comedy/action harem series Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero which was originally aired in Japan in summer 2012. Following an international training organisation called Babel which protects young people returning from another world. Akatsuki, a wayward hero, returns from a world of swords and magic called Alayzard with the daughter of the last Dark Lord, Myuu. No release date or format have been confirmed yet.

I wonder if they'll get any of these out on blu ray?

They announced the first two on blu-ray. Given their claim that blu rays are actually cheaper to produce for them now than DVDs, I should think that they will actually come out in that format as well.

I should hope that cancelled blu ray releases should be a thing of the past now.

Thanks.

I really don't know why they licensed the third title on the list as by all reports it's awful, they should have gone for something like So I can Play H which is supposed to be a lot better.

My thoughts are that the people who arranged to get the license of the series probably didn't actually watch it themselves, and only looked at the (misleading) synopsis.

That said, it does have its fans - mainly people who like having a protagonist who does literally whatever they want without any consideration for those around him (and usually describe this as "being a man").

Ack... trying to portray that jerk in such a positive light as that makes me sick.

I've not seen the show but get the feeling you're far from a fan of it. What are the other main issues with it aside from your already outlined negative points?

It's a piece of misogynistic trash even by anime standards. And that's saying something. There was a review of it on ANN recently, and that largely sums up my feelings towards it. here

From looking over the synopses before the season started it was vying with kokoro connect for the title that looked to be the most promising and interesting in the Summer 2012 season. The idea of a series set in a world of returned heroes after they finished their quests really captured my interest. First episode looked like a disappointment, but still possibly worth watching.

Then episode 2 happened.

Raping your just-adopted little sister? Check.
Dismissing it as being fine and completely ignoring it afterwards just because he was asleep at the time and he was dreaming that he was raping his REAL and DEAD sister which of course makes everything fine (wait what?)? Check.
Using magic to force people to do things like quite literally pissing themselves? Check.

And of course everyone in the series loves him for doing this stuff to them.

Yeah...

But to be honest, the main reason I consider this series to be the single worst story I've ever come across rather than merely a strong contender for the title is just how spectacularly it failed to live up to what it had promised.

And then Manga come along in their podcast and start presenting it in the very same way as what tricked me into giving it a try. The idea of other people falling for the same trap that I did is what bugs me.

If you want sadistic fetish fuel or a parade of the antics of an egomaniacal bully with magic powers designed to defeat his enemies (in other words, basically everyone) through sexual humiliation, whilst being presented as a positive role model, go ahead and watch this series. If you want something that explores the idea of how someone who has been transported to another world and made into a hero there adapts back to normal life after returning home then this anime is to be avoided.

I really had no interest in DxD until all this talk about it potentially struggling with the BBFC, now I'm curious enough that I might actually buy it just to see what all the fuss is about. Basically the Grand Theft Auto effect at work.

As for Aesthetica, I really knew nothing about it until this week. Jonathan Clements made it sound incredibly interesting in the podcast, but after reading through this thread I think I'll pass. It sounds like the sort of show that would make me want to throw things at the tv.

At least Devil is a Part-Timer is a less controversial license, I'll probably buy that.

And if BluRay is now cheaper than DVD (or at least the ones that need converting to PAL) maybe we are only a year or two away from the time when Manga will stop releasing DVDs altogether. A man can dream

TBH from your description I would imagine it may struggle to get a certificate. These days the BBFC have very strict rules on the use of sexual violence in titles & I could see this falling afoul of them.

Well, while I can't fault your overall analysis of the show it's bit much to say he raped her

He grabs her and throws her to the bed, goes in for a kiss but doesn't, asks her what her name is, strips her, she says she is his sister and he clearly responds that his sister died ages ago and then he gropes her.

There's plenty of shows with groping and I don't see how you can say rape in this instance. Similarly it's clear enough that he recognises that she is not his sister and that he knows she died years ago, also they are posing as brother and sister with their actual relationship being undefined.

There's a clip on youtube if anyone's interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpg8L32ZSkw

Like I say I can't fault your viewpoint regarding the overall show but you undermine you own arguments by over stating events.

If I do that's just because of memory fading, and perhaps making the negatives more accentuated over time. It is about a year and a half ago now, and I certainly never went back over anything in this series. I tried to divert my thoughts away from it after watching each episode as well - and eventually gave up and dropped the series completely.

They had a similar storyline in the first season of the new Dallas (Rebecca Sutter and her 'brother').

Yikes :S That scene ..no words.

Don't think it'll be a purchase now, the synopsis sounds alright but that scene and what everyone's saying about it :/ ..

I've just literally finished watching the series today and overall it's pretty average.

Concept is good, but then we end up in a generic school type scenario? Having the male lead as a badass from the get go strikes me as a mistake, where is the room to grow? Having a lead that's not afraid of girls is a good idea, but why did they go the super pervert route? at least the lead of HighSchool DxD starts out weak and can grow despite being a perv.

It picked up a little when they didn't just ignore the world he saved but the resulting fight dragged on.

Episode 2 has a bunch of objectionable content, otherwise run of the mill with only a low level hook that might make you think the plot could develop in a second season. Not a great licence to be honest.
