Making old scool mix tapes/compilations

So, it's 1:21 am and I'm still up working on a CD mix for my girlfriend to take on holiday with her. (I'm actually just about to burn it). Do people still do things like this? I used to make mix tapes all the time back in the day when I still had an old Sony Walkman. I guess ipod's and mp3 playlists etc. have killed most of that. =(

I've done it all nice. It's one constant track that mixes all the songs into each other. So she has to listen all the way through and hopefully each new song will be a cool surprise. Here's the listing:

1. Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2. Hard to Explain - The Strokes
3. Back of the Van - Ladyhawke
4. Lights & Magic - Cut // Copy
5. Lovestoned / I Think She Knows - Justin Timberlake
6. The '59 Sound - The Gaslight Anthem
7. Making Eyes At You - Black Kids
8. Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I want - The Dream Academy (Smiths Cover)
9. Melt Your Heart - Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins
10. Across The Sea - Weezer
11. Hysteric - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
12. True - Spandau Ballet =D

If anyone else on here has made any compilations recently, post 'em up here. You don't have to give any reasons as to why you choose them unles you want to. I'm really into my music and I just find it interesting what people choose to put on their playlists. (I'm also slightly delirious at such an early hour!)

Regards =)

I think that the last time I did a mix tape Blaze of Glory from Bon Jovi was in the top spot at MTV....

Making it a constant track without the ability to skip it will be more annoying than cool after the first time, if you ask me, but its'your compilation / GF, so who am I to judge.

Instead, I'll list songs I'd use if I were to make a compilation CD.

Velouria - Pixies
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Born 2 slow - Crystal Method
American Jesus - Bad Religion
Supernaut - Black Sabath
Song 2 - Blur
Favourite Game - Cardigans
London Calling - The Clash
She sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Hands around my throat - Death in Vegas
Enjoy the silence - Depech Mode
Misirlou - Dick Dale
Peruvian Skies - Dream Theater
Hole Hearted - Extreme
Praise you - Fatboy Slim
Hocus Pocus - Focus
Voodoo Child - G3
Parade - Garbage
Wrong and Strong - Gambale, Hamm & Smith
you could be mine - Guns & Roses
Unsung - Helmet
Therapy - Infectious Grooves

Black ice - Stuart Hamm
It's going down - Suicidal Tendencies
48 Crash - Suzi Quatro
Flowers by the door - True Sounds Of Liberty
Change - Tears for fears
Red Hot - Vanessa Mae
Rebel Maniac - Viper
Cats are not lucky creatures - The world / Inferno friendship society
The brother of the mayor of Bridgewater - The world / Inferno friendship society
Rusty Nail - X
Roundabout - Yes
Rise - Yoko Kanno + Origa

Ok, it was harder than I though - I decided to choose only one song from bands I like several, with one exception for WIFS, which is my favourite band. It was tough to choose for the likes of Rush, Metallica, AC/DC...

I suggest you mix the tracks like one big track as you said, but break it up into tracks like on a non-stop album, so you can still skip backwards & forwards.

I think you'd need at least 5 CDs for that lot, chaos =)
Mp3 for the win =D
I'll try to narrow that down later.

But there is so much good stuff in there. I'll make that into a playlist for me later and I forgot to include Born to be wild - Sttepenwolf

Chaos, yeah well my girlfriend has a long flight so I thought this might keep her amused for an hour or so. It's not really meant to be played over and over. I'll let you know later whether she likes it or not!

You've got some utter classics in that list, and I'd forgot about that cover of The Smiths 'How Soon is Now'. Will have to dig that out again. Now the tricky bit is narrowing it down onto something you could get on to a regular audio CD. Good luck! ;)

All these would probably make it onto my list too :thumb:

As far as the actual topic is concerned; being a bit of an electronic music enthusiast I often play around with virtual DJ software and try my hand at mixing lots of songs into one continuous track. I'm quite rubbish though, so as it stands I never record them, I just do it when I fancy listening to a compilation, picking the tracks as I go.

I don't know about you guys, but I think if we're given permission by Chaos we could all do this to share music tastes and give examples of what we listen to. Not to alter the direction of the topic, just a suggestion of course.

Looking at Chaos' list I would be quite happy to get a Mix CD from him except for the Fatboy Slim. If we are doing this properly it should only be around 15 tracks or so depending on length.

Deliverance - Mission
This Corrosion - The Sisters Of Mercy
English Civil War - The Clash
The KKK Took My Baby Away - The Ramones
California Über Alles - The Dead Kennedys
Stupid Questions - New Model Army
Ich Bin Ein Auslander - PWEI
Orgasm Addict - The Buzzcocks
Boys Don't Cry - The Cure
The History Of The World (Part 1) - The Damned
Laura - Fields Of The Nephilim
Supernaut - 1000 Homo DJs / Ministry
Another Man's Cause - Levellers
Where The Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Love Like Blood - Killing Joke

Now getting them into an appropriate order would take a little bit of work.
