Super Bowl Sunday, which ironically means that I might actually be able to get the weekend off because there's so little other sport on. Not convinced I'll go, though, way too much of the stuff mentioned or listed is the "bad" side of anime cons.

At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, I thought exactly the same thing :/

It sounds like nu-LAC, Extended Edition. I miss the old LAC. Still, good for young 'uns I guess.

Curiously if there's too much of the "bad" side, what would you see replaced and what for?

I'm no fan of the fella or the events, but i'm not a hater either, so I'm curious as to where it all comes from.

I don't know the fellow and haven't been to any of his events yet, as for one reason or another, I always had something else to do. But at least, I give him credit for organizing so much stuff.

Considering they are alive and well, I reckon there must be enough fans to support this, no?

Lack of stuff actualy related to anime, of the 10 I think are close enough related only two are directly related to anime. The AMV contest, and Dub the anime. Quizes might be okay as well.

You see the problem, there's no/little anime in that anime con.

Okay, I can see your point there. So, basically the event could do with being renamed in some way to advertise what it truly is? Seems like a fair comment to me.

I want nothing to do with this. Towers needs to get his fail away from us all.
Towers?

Michael Towers, aka AnimeLeague's founder, FreeSaiyan. I've met him and roomed with him at Expo in the past, and he is a good guy. Whatever you may think of his events, you can't slag a person off if you have never interacted with them yourself.

Though personally, I think his events are aimed at the younger end of the fandom. The same end AnimeLeague caters for.

Also, Reaper, understand that most of the events you have called 'iffy' or unrelated, are in fact related on the basis of being popular within the anime community or by having a certain 'Japanesey' quality to them, like DDR. Very relevant at an anime convention, DDR is. Basically, if you want to know how to do an anime convention perfectly, look at Minamicon. Any similarity to Minami is a good similarity.

I don't think anyone ever suggested that the root of the problem wasn't the "modern anime community". :p

(although I think "modern 'anime con' community" would be more accurate)

I dunno, but I like DDR and it is very popular at Minamicon, which is practically the last bastion for the longer-standing anime fan.

They even showed Dragon Half the other year. :D Most fans nowadays haven't heard of it any more.

I have nothing personal against DDR (Rock Band, however...) but at nu-LAC it singlehandedly completely obliterated any actual anime discussion by virtue of being loud and attention-grabbing, right in the middle of the chatting area. I stopped going to LAC.

At Minamicon, when I used to attend, it wasn't so bad as the games were penned away in their own little room and it was surrounded by relevantly anime-related games as well. It just seems annoying that now it's easier to pop down a few multiplayer music games, and maybe SF4 or Blazblue, and call that an anime convention.

It does feel as though there's not much out there for grumpy old anime fans any more. Last time I went to Minamicon the oldies seemed to be outnumbered by the excited cosplayers and I just didn't know what to do with myself. I like the idea of cosplay, but a lot of people seem to do it just for attention more than because they actually enjoy the series itself, so actually finding people at a con who are talking about anime instead of just posing or being posed for seems to get harder each year. The dealers room and even the video rooms seemed to be struggling to get peoples' attention too.

To make roughly the same point as this, if you look at the listing of events I would have an easier time buying this as a cosplay con than an anime con. Cosplay is only relevant to anime up until it becomes only about the cosplay.
