Laptop buying advice

The laptop I'm currently using is just not working well anymore (hardware problems) so I've decided to get a new one, here's the thing though I want to be sure I get one that's better than the one I have and not one that even though is a new model is only half as good as the one I have (I've had my current laptop since about January 2008)

Also I want to be sure I don't get ripped off because I payed a lot for the one I'm using (got it from PC World whom I've heard are rip offs when it comes to laptops though I didn't know that back then), long story short anyone have any advice on laptop buying just so I get a better deal this time around?

Also the specs just for referene is a Intel Dual Core 2.20GHz processor, 2GB RAM and an NVIDA GeForce 8400M GT 256 built-in graphics card

Most online retailers, like ebuyer, Overclockers and MESH Computers are pretty good.
As for the laptop itself, just go with something that gets a lot of positive customer reviews/feedback. You can get a decent laptop for roughly £400.

Well, I end up having quite a bit of experience with laptop buying. Really there's also an element of luck involved with reliability, its the one thing that's really hard to judge... It would be nice to know what you plan to use it for, ie gaming at all?
If you want to game then your laptop will be considerably more than if you just want internet and word. Also what screen size do you want.

All in all I recommend Toshiba, the primary reasons are:

1) They have by far and away the best internal build quality (20% better than Apple on the Industry Standard Scale) and part quality (The external is questionable though- but it'll holdjust fine)

2) reasonable price and a wide range (Once you figure out how to navigate their genuinely horrific website and find the models they hide away)
