Maybe we should consider making a sticky thread with a list of anime "classics" under different genres that all fans should see. Might be a good idea as it seems to get asked quite regularly.
 
To be fair, that is what the anime views and recommendations forum is for; a whole forum rather than a single thread. It is just that most forum users are lazy and don't read what is in there before asking the same question yet again and the same would be true of a sticky topic.
 
Think the thread belongs in the recommendation forum, but the idea is a sound one. There a a lot of anime that really help understanding of other anime, others are useful for showing certain genre's or milestones in anime.
 
I agree with Gawyn, that's what this entire forum is for. I think a whole forum works better than one single thread. And besides, after recognised 'classics' like Cowboy Bebop, Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion are submitted, it'll all become too subjective.
 
I just remember when I first started out that I felt really ignorant about all these old titles that everyone else had seen. It seems a lot of others have this problem as well. For example I was buying Noir (big mistake) before I'd even heard of Macross or Gundam Zeta.
 
I too can see your point but I also think that it’s nice to find your own way in anime. I enjoyed randomly stumbling from one series to another. And still do. I’m not sure what I’d have made of being given a list of what I should watch.

Oddly enough, I too watched Noir very early on in my anime-watching career (although I actually loved it) and likewise without having seen or having knowledge of more ‘key’ anime. And I’ve been watching anime with a passion for about twelve months now and I’ve only just discovered Mobile Suit Gundam.
