How to deal with a Gaijin.

Foreigners in anime are usually based on sterotypes.
(white, blonde blue eyes and quite big)(ok so i fit the citera of all 4 :p )
I don't think it's intentially but the japanesse can be quite xenophobic at times but i notice other than being fairly obsence we aren't depicted as brutish anymore.

Lol! That clip was cool! Virtually everyone in that scene was a stereotype of some sort so it wasn't particularly offensive. In terms of the black guy having an Afro's it's standard fare to be frank (it's quite cool fashionable imo ), but at least it avoids the road of whole 'minstrel' depiction which has been can appear in some older shows.

I also remember seeing an odd translation in a version of Tenjho Tenge that referred to Bob being strong because of his 'black body'... which I thought was a bit weird. :?

I find that a lot of this stuff is based on ignorance of the creator's as opposed to general malice which means the issue sometimes isn't quite that clear-cut. I can't decide where Pedro from Excel Saga stands for example - I just ignore it and laugh at the jokes at surface value instead.

Another one I just thought of. There's a scene in Azumanga that's pretty funny where Yukari meets a foreigner. Not every foreigner has blue eyes! It's more a short-hand so we can tell the character's foreign without much more explanation. It's also a part of the joke so it was a fair shot. I find it more unnerving when you see character turn round a say "...it's a foreigner!". That's just rude!

It goes both ways though. You see generalised stereotypes in UK media as well so it still happens elsewhere. Not that it makes it any more acceptable!

Best foreign character imo: Asuka from Evangelion.

To be fair the clip looks quite old, times have changed. Although I'd hardly say anime is free from this kind of stereotype, even now.

Definitely, German curses sound great for some reason :)

Lol, well it's about time they all figured that Japan is the most superior country!

Out of context it's hard to figure out whether that's racist, propaganda or satire. (and what the hell's ith the shaky guy on the right?)

I do have an example where an American/European thinks America is the superior country.

It's also much better/lulzier than the above example.

Truly bizarre.

I don't appreciate Viz's editing of black characters' lips (especially Mr Popo...he's not even a human!).

Not all black people have thick lips, and obviously there's plenty of thick-lipped white people (Martin Clunes!)...yeah, fine. But it's still a common characteristic of black people (and black men revel in the EVIL stereotype that they all have huge wangs...not offended by that for some reason...).

Obviously the removal of a black character's lips won't ruin the story for me, but it's a pussy move.

"Offensive blackface stereotypes" or whatever...I don't see how it's any more offensive or damaging to black people than the likes of Dave Chappelle or the dire Cryme Tyme (two - black - wrestlers who gladly took home paycheques to pretend to be street thugs and criminals).

If anyone's offended, I'm sorry you feel that way...but I don't like this ridiculous editing,
