While there was another topic with this question, this one is more about how much of a series you watch in a lump. The reason for this is that up until recently been watching most of the anime by getting either a volume or a series and the sitting down and watching the lot, partially cause when I went over seas got the lot as didn’t know if I’d get it over here. Over here generally went of older series (due to budget reasons) and was able to get most of the series cheap and quick. Sitting through a 26 episode has meant I go for things with a fairly tight plot, likeable enough characters and little filler.
More recently I’ve been watching series more by the DVD as I’ve started renting them and started buying newer series (got a job, and it pays more than peanuts). This has shifted what I see as, rather than watching it all in order, I tend to re-watch one DVD at least twice before getting the next DVD. This means I pick up smaller clues that previously would have gone missed or only I would have barely picked up on their importance.
And most recently I’ve started watching series episode by episode (due to the availability of internet access), and this has again changed how I look at some series. The one main differences are that cliff hangers and ‘in the next episode’ mean something. Previously it was just an extra click of the FF button or changing the disc and you know what happens next. Not so if you’re watching them once a week, you have time to wonder and worry, but not wait the few months between DVD’s to re-watch the previous episodes. It also makes more episodic shows much more watchable as each episode can be taken by itself, rather than as part of the series where individual episodes may not mesh well together.
