Help on Shonen Series

Ive watched a lot of bleach and it is now my favourite anime at the moment
I like the idea of a character who starts off weak but gradually gets more powerful till he's the greatest
I know it's cliched, but which series do you think is better overall One Piece or Naruto
People hail these two anime's as the greatest ever made, I don't know if this is true but I'd be willing to watch them
Ive watched a few of the dubbed episodes that used to be on cartoon network and jetix but im looking to invest with the sub for a long time so which do you think is better, or if you have any other suggestions please say so

seen Dragon Ball Z, FMA

Yu Yu Hakusho, it does exactly what you're after, has less of a pacing problem than Bleach, and is also finished so their won't be any waiting around for new episodes.
It has a pretty good dub too if you wanted to watch the dub instead.

Also you say you've watched Dragonball Z, if you haven't watched Dragonball yet, watch that, although Goku starts off fairly strong in that.

Perhaps "greatest ever made" is a bit too much for then. Shounen titles are generally as you've stated, main character starts off weak and gradually over a mountain of challenge, gets stronger and stronger, gathering allies as he goes and generally is always the one to be the big bad guy. They aren't the greatest ever made, but they sure are fun to watch.

Bleach is mediocre overall, its storyline is decent enough, and the characters are likeable, but i feel that Tite Kubo maybe added a few too many characters to his roster, and the anime itself goes into filler too much for its own good. The manga can be extremely varied in quality too, one chapter it could go at the best pace for it and be great, but the next, slow and boring, or worse, too fast.

Naruto is well renowned yes, and generally appeals to those younger viewers i think. It has a fair bit which will attract people too it, and i'll admit, i do enjoy reading it, but again, its far from perfect, specially anime wise. The anime itself, the first one at least, was 220 episodes, of which, only the first 135 episodes followed the manga, then because of the wait for part too(later made into Shippuden, which is apparently EXTREMELY slow), and the 136-220 was pure filler.

One Piece is the strongest of the big three Shounen Jump series, its always fun, entertaining and almost never drops in quality. What could be the main problem if you are new to the series however, is the fact that the anime itself is well over 420 episodes, and the manga is only 26 chapters from hitting 600. You may also get put off by its unique art style, but seriously, when you look away from that, you get the best shounen jump series there is. If i was to pick for you which to go with of the three, this is it.

Erm, outwith that. You say you have watched FMA, but look into FMA: Brotherhood, its a new anime based more closely on the FMA manga, as its still ongoing, and chances are, instead of going down its own route for the last 25 episodes of the first anime, will no doubt end as the manga does, so it'll be a completely different experience to that which you experienced in the "original" anime.

A few recommend Hunter X Hunter, Shaman King and so on, but i don't know much on them, so i'd look for others to reply on that note.

Rave Master is a fairly good series if you want Shounen, Chrono Crusade is a good watchas well if you're familair with stuff such as Hellsing and Devil May Cry

Lot of good ones mentioned, so for now I will only add Kekkaishi, Reborn, the question of "do you like sports series?" and five other words:

Fist.

Of.

The.

North.

Star.

One Piece is everything Naruto isn't.

Also, Hunter X Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho are slow starters but they by far have the best narrative and story-telling over the majority of Shounen Jump works. Togashi is a God.

Oh man, I totally forget - Reborn! That's an excellent series, I recommend it. There's a fair bit of crap in it as well, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. Also echoing the One Piece suggestion, of course.

Yu Yu Hakusho. My favorite anime.

Others I have seen:
DB/Z/GT/Kai
Naruto/Shippuden
Bleach
The Law of Ueki
Shaman King
Rave Master
Buso Renkin
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Yu-Gi-Oh/GX (maybe?)
Digimon/Tamers/Frontier/Data Squad
Zenki
Gravion/Zwei
Mai-Hime
Mai-Otome/Zwei

After seeing this many, I can predict whats gonna happen and how much its gonna piss me off in these shows... *sigh*

Two series--both from Shonen Jump--that fit your preferences pretty much exactly (though do so in ways you wouldn't quite expect) are Hikaru no Go and Whistle!. In each instance, the hero starts out weak--remarkably so--but overcomes adversity and becomes progressively stronger.

And I'd recommend them both in a heart-beat.

I started Hikaru no Go after my friend was raving about it. The beggining was so much like Yu-Gi-Oh, it was untrue. I then proceded to stop 6eps in. The abridged series is very good though. :p

Hikaru no Go is absolutely wonderful. I'm a huge fan of the series. I loved the fact the characters noticeably age over the course of the show and the Go matches were unbelievably intense. It never felt repetitive or predictable, it was just a good real world look into the Go world. The supernatural element was a little bit odd to begin with, but its hardly distracting. A really fun, no filler, shonen show. And with 70 something episodes, its not exactly going to take anyone years to watch.
