Earlier this year, Hayao Miyazaki's final feature length film, the semi-biographical The Wind Rises was nominated for the Best Animated Feature category of the Academy Awards. Although the prize ultimately went to Pixar's Frozen, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced back in August that the critically acclaimed animator and director has been offered the Academy's Honorary Governer Award, in honour of his contributions to his contributions and service to the industry.

Earlier this week, Hayao Miyazaki confirmed that he would be attending yesterday's event in person and earlier today, the Academy uploaded a video of Miyazaki accepting the honour onto their YouTube channel:

Notice the silence in the room when Miyazaki mentions how Japan hasn't been at war for 50 years....
Not surprising, where exactly was he going with that statement?
Maybe just being thankful? Or perhaps, given his anti-war stances and a public platform in the United States he thought he'd just casually allude to the interesting fact that successive US governments since the end of WWII have gone on to be massive global warmongers after winning, while Japan has never gone to war again since losing.

Either way, he'd have a point.
