Gungrave

I've always thought of Gungrave as a heavily underwatched series. How many people on here have watched Gungrave?

Gungrave was my favourite anime series in existence for many years, only recently being knocked off the top spot by Death Note. Not much can come close to Gungrave in most areas, character development and the emotional impact it has an viewers being the best areas of Gungrave.

My love for the series can best be expressed by saying that I, someone with a small amount of money coming in and no semi-rich parents, spent £45ish (+ a £20 customs bill) on the R1 box set after watching the series on my PC. Do I regret it? Not a bit. twisted:

I loved the series and I too have it on DVD. I found it completely by accident too. Nice surprise though when I watched it. Awsome storyline and character development. Definatley one to watch for all you who haven't seen it yet :D

Watched the series and thought it was brilliant, loved the animation style and the characters were well thought out.

Also I loved the flash back style of story telling as it didn't get boring really quickly.

However I would have liuked to see more fighting when Brandon is turned into Grave as he didn't use his coffin enough in my opinion

A definite two thumbs up for Gungrave here!

Many years ago I'd happened to pick up the original game for the PS2, and kinda liked it (even though it was kinda basic and one dimensional as games go, striking a pose was fun though!)
Not long after the series started being released in the states, so I collected it.

Have to say I was initially surprised at how totally different to the game it was, and so much for the better!
The games storyline is only loosely followed towards the latter part of the series; the first half comprises of the "past" of the characters, and is very much in a Godfather Mafioso spin.
I was totally enthralled with it, the depth of character development really got me and the story really drags you in as it follows Brandon and Harry's progress through the Organisation.
With a cool styling reminiscent of Bebop inter spaced with fast paced action (perhaps a bit too far spaced though), I'd recommend it to those who like a bit of Mafia action, probably appealing most to the crowd that like Black Lagoon, Bebop, Hellsing, etc.
It's one downside though is its slow pace; we recently watched it all in one go on an anime marathon and its really hard going that way, especially around the middle. Best watched in smaller bursts I'd say :)

The activity of this thread kinda proves that it is indeed rather underwatched. It's a shame, Gungrave is most certainly one of the best series out there...

I LOVED the flashback part of the series, everything about it was well done, the character development being done amazingly well throughout. Each episode leading up to you-know-what-in-the-elevator got me more and more hooked, then the execution of the episode you-know-what-in-the-elevator happened just blew me away.

Not sure about the 'slow-pacing' mentioned above, never felt like it was dragging to me. I've watched Gungrave on numerous occasions, sometimes watching 1-26 in one sitting, and I've never once felt the need to skip any episodes.

I've got the MVM boxset *although I’ve only watched 4 volumes so far* but I’ve completed the video game several times so I know the story.
Yeah its under watched and is also an awesome series. Its not everyday that a video game gets made into an anime and works quite that well.

Actually finished watching this 2 days ago and thought it was awesome. My only problem with it was that it sorta turned into a monster of the week show in the last 6 or so episodes. The last episode was fantastic though, so it made up for it.

If you love the anime, buy the game, its a simple shoot 'em up but its one of my fave games to play when I am bored especially when you can just sit there and love the gunplay Grave uses throughout

It might have just been the 4am effect :)

Totally agree though, Gungrave is way underrated for how good it is :)

Wasn't there a second game as well, Gungrave: Overdose ?
Never picked it up myself but from what I've seen it looked quite interesting.

Oh oh, for those hardcore Grave fans out there, try tracking down the Artbook for it; one of our soc guys has it and there are some seriously nice bits of artwork in there! Serious Gungrave eyecandy :D

Yeah there was a sequel but I could never get hold of a copy. I still keep an eye out for it in sales though as I would love to add it to my collection

I love Gungrave
Been a fan since the ps2 original game which i picked up purely because of the anime style front cover, a couple of years later a sequel and an anime came forward, had to watch it.

At first i thought whats with the flashback, i wanna see Beyond the Grave but after a bit i much preffered the mafia past storyline and really didn't want it to end. It takes quite a different spin from the video game but i personally find it better but i'm not sure whether i like the video game or the series ending best. I thought it was so well done and the bond between Brandon and his friends that is created is amazingly touching.

Real shame there's not going to be a series 2 based off of the 2nd game but hey. I loved Gungrave and would defintely recommend it, i was purely hooked.

£45 ouch, i got the lot for half that price.
Usually American prices are so much cheaper, why do 4 episode dvd's cost nearly £20 when entire series collections are like £25, it eludes me how they charge stupidly high prices compared to the US and other countries.

But anyway yeah, go watch Gungrave if you havn't already
