Gungrave or Trigun?

harkins

Adventurer
I’ve overdosed on ‘girls with guns’ type series of late and I was looking for something more ‘guys with guns’. Perhaps something a little dark and with a reasonable smattering of violence. Gungrave and Trigun seem to be two well rated examples.

Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which is the best series to start collecting? Or is there a better series than either of those?

Gungrave is very dark and there is certainly a lot of action and violence, it's a great series.

Trigun is different in that it has a lot more comedy. Very high on the action level like Gungrave. Highly entertaining and a series I can watch anytime.

out of those two I'd say you should go for Gungrave though seeing as you want something a little darker. Trigun has sprinklings of grim moments but the comedy is nearly always there to stop it from being too dark.

There are better series than these, no doubt but I found them to be highly entertaining with a good rewatch value. Heat Guy J might be worth a look into as well, you can pick it up cheap in the UK and like most series like this it's just solid entertainment.

If Trigun has a lot of comedy running through it I'll go for Gungrave then.

Seems you can get the DVD's at reasonable prices in the UK so it'll be nice to buy something from somewhere other than UP for a change.

BOTH

I have both of these series and I have to say I prefer Trigun, especially with characters as interesting as Vash the Stampede and Nicholas D. Wolfwood.

Read Trigun manga, anime ain't too good. So get Gungrave.
I thought the Trigun manga was poor compared to the anime. Unlike the manga the anime doesn't drag on for books and books with confusingly drawn fight scenes. The manga is pretty much generic shonen action and loses it's fun really quickly.

If anybody wants to check out Trigun I'd say go for the anime and forget about the manga.

Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow did the character designs for Gungrave, and they are quite similar stories in that they take cliche American culture (Westerns and mafia) into extreme territory with supernatural elements. Both are great shows, but Gungrave packs a real emotional punch, is more dramatic and moving. Like everyone has said, Trigun often lapses into comedy... Gungrave... I don't think Brandon laughs once. So yeah, I'd recommend Gungrave too (and don't be put off by the first episode) - it has a brilliant climax.

Or talks much. :p

I loved that scene with Bradon and Harry in the glass elevator. That has got to be one of my favourite scenes from an anime. Something I noticed but it might be just me... From the first episode onwards did peoples heads start getting smaller and smaller? They look like baseballs on disk 5. o_O
