I’ve just finished watching Gungrave and what a fantastic series it was. And to think I’d dismissed it for so long because it originated from a game.
Seeing as it has had a few mentions as featuring some peoples favourite anime moments in this thread, I thought it’d be good to say a few things about it in it’s own thread. Beware of spoilers (sorry if it’s already too late for that, Ninja Boy).
Well, it had just about a bit of everything for me, great characters, great character development, engrossing story, shed loads of action, no slow or dull episodes and superb music. And surely Harry MacDowel must be the best baddie ever? I loved watching him change as he craved and acquired more and more power.
The penultimate episode was probably my favourite because of the, in my opinion, best ever use of flashbacks in an anime. I was really moved by those scenes. And the weird thing was that I felt like I’d been there with them in the slums in those early days. I just wish they seen it out there in an extended 25th episode and done away with the slightly protracted 26th.
If I were going to say anything critical of it, it would only be that, in all honesty, it wasn’t the finest quality animation I’ve seen. And the tiny heads that all male characters possessed topped that off. But that is a small criticism that didn’t do anything to spoil the series for me.
Having never played or seen the PS2 game, I can only assume that the orgmen were a main feature. I’d have loved the series even more if it had had a slightly less fantastical element in that respect. Bob Poundmax’s ‘superior’ form was also a little too incredible for my liking. But hey, overall it is a fantastic show and I mustn’t start picking a few odd holes in it. So to anyone who hasn’t seen it, put it on your must see list.
