Gungrave (cw spoilers)

I’ve just finished watching Gungrave and what a fantastic series it was. And to think I’d dismissed it for so long because it originated from a game.

Seeing as it has had a few mentions as featuring some peoples favourite anime moments in this thread, I thought it’d be good to say a few things about it in it’s own thread. Beware of spoilers (sorry if it’s already too late for that, Ninja Boy).

Well, it had just about a bit of everything for me, great characters, great character development, engrossing story, shed loads of action, no slow or dull episodes and superb music. And surely Harry MacDowel must be the best baddie ever? I loved watching him change as he craved and acquired more and more power.

The penultimate episode was probably my favourite because of the, in my opinion, best ever use of flashbacks in an anime. I was really moved by those scenes. And the weird thing was that I felt like I’d been there with them in the slums in those early days. I just wish they seen it out there in an extended 25th episode and done away with the slightly protracted 26th.

If I were going to say anything critical of it, it would only be that, in all honesty, it wasn’t the finest quality animation I’ve seen. And the tiny heads that all male characters possessed topped that off. But that is a small criticism that didn’t do anything to spoil the series for me.

Having never played or seen the PS2 game, I can only assume that the orgmen were a main feature. I’d have loved the series even more if it had had a slightly less fantastical element in that respect. Bob Poundmax’s ‘superior’ form was also a little too incredible for my liking. But hey, overall it is a fantastic show and I mustn’t start picking a few odd holes in it. So to anyone who hasn’t seen it, put it on your must see list.

One of my fave animes, I actually only bought it because I had the game on the PS2 and loved the non-stop shooting and cell shaded scenes. Ok so the series is missing the cell-shading but the action is top notch.

I was especially impressed with the approach the series takes, rather than starting where Graves revenge kicks off, the series goes back to 'the beginning' of Harry and Graves relationship and charts there rise rise through the crime organisation.

The ending is amazing, and although the animation is not some of the best I have seen it does add a gritty edge the series

I would say it was one of the greatest emotional animes around nearly every episode made me want to cry or throw my Tv out the window because of some guy been a nob. The Ending is unreal I watched it 5 times just so I could get over it. But I didnt like the 1st episode it kind of confused me until I saw the second.

I love how you see Harry slowly losing control, and even though he is the 'baddie' you still can't help but loving him.(well i do  )

Just extremely emotional. Its one of those animes i love so much, yet dont want to watch as its so depressing.Suppose you have to be in the mood...

Brandon and Harrys relationship is nothing short of beautiful, yet horribly complicated.

I cant get enough of it! :D

The way we see Harry orchestrate the chaos around him puts me in mind of Kurosawa’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear, Ran. Do check it out if you haven't seen it. It just has a similar feeling of hopelessness as things go careering out of control.

I think it might be the first anime that I’ll re-watch.

I loved big daddy his ideas and his values and his biggest rule dont betray. He was a perfect character

A proper mob boss, all about 'the family and respect'. The one thing I would have loved to see would be the coffin that appears in the game, that thing was awesome

The thing with Big Daddy for me was, that despite how appropriate the name was, I couldn’t help but be reminded of a big fat fella called Shirley wearing a leotard.

I did like how Bob Poundmax’s physique changed through the series. It has served a warning to me because I love eating nearly as much he does!

I can't help but love Bunji in the series, such a great character.(err wolfwood much?!)

Now he was a character I would have loved in the game, Bunji was probably my 2nd fave character next to Grave, got a real Wolfwood vibe off of him too. Loved the gun fights he got involved in, he was brutal.
