Gungrave and Samurai 7

This year and last year i have been getting so many anime boxsets such as: Elfen lied, Trigun, Samurai champloo, and Hellsing. I plan on getting the S-cry-ed and Tenjho Tenge boxsts aswell. But ive also heared about 2 other anime boxsets called Gungrave and Samurai 7. Ive seen clips of these on youtube. Are they worth getting?

Gungrave is probably the best video game adaptation in existence. The writers created an entirely new (the games didn't explain the story that lead up to the events of the first game), then linked them up once the story reached the start of the games story.

If you enjoy watching gangster films, such as The Godfather, you'll love episodes 2-13 - It's been called The Godfather of anime on more than one occasion.

I'd say that Gungrave has the perfect balance between it's action, storytelling and characterization. A definite must have in my opinion.

I only got through the first couple of Samurai 7 DVD's before I gave up. There's just nothing to it that really stands out.

Would i have to play the games of Gungrave to understand the anime?

No, but since you appear to lack the ability to comprehend text on screen, it might be best not to watch it.

As I CLEARLY pointed out, the writers behind the anime made up a prequel story to the first game, later linking up the new story and the story of the first game. Understand?

I liked the beginning of Samurai 7, it was pretty good, by half way it started getting really ******, worth buying if you really want to see it for yourself, otherwise just don't.

Gungrave is my fav anime of all time.
I agree the games really never went into the whole story at all, and left me confussed after the 2nd game they brought out.

The anime on the other hand explains everthing so well, so there really is no need to even play the games. (even though the games are good hehe)

The action is amazing in the anime, and the storyline is so well told it hooks you right in from Ep1.

Its sad in parts, like most animes are, but you feel for every character in the anime. Not just the main person, but all the others too.

But yea thats my opinion ^_^

It seems like Gonzo's anime are more of a showcase of their animation skills than a showcase of story. I've seem quite a bit of Gonzo and I can safely say that I think they combine both perfectly, but for the people who think it's all pure animation showcasing and no story, then just wait for when Blu-ray sets of anime start coming along, there are a lot of anime that were animated in HD, but only get ****** DVD quality encodes to show off what they're really like. RahXephon was animated in HD, and Samurai 7 had a huge production budget and was animated in HD, so once people can see them like that, the whole experience will change.

Watch Gankutsuou and Romeo x Juliet.

I do agree with regards to some of their other series, such as Vandread. All looks and very little substance.

The opinion wasn't my own.

I've seen a few episodes of Gankutsuou, and I fully realise that Gonzo produce some absolutely amazing titles.

I was using what other people have written hundreds of times to explain what I said.

I love Samurai 7, haven't seen Gungrave or Gankutsuou. Heard good things about them already.

So much to see and so little time...

Samurai 7 is one of my alll time favourites. BTW, all these animes from Gonzo? mm, just checked the list of animes from them at wikipedia, they have some great titles in there....

Gungrave is well worth the watch, it is like two series in one gangster storyline and the more sci fi storyline. There is a good story throughout with the early gang stuff is very believable, and it has a good balance between story and action.

I am a big fan of the original 7 Samurai film and I think Samurai 7 is a good re-telling of the story in a futuristic setting, I really enjoyed it as you could see the same characterisation as the original film. However I can see why people might judge it negatively as it does go a little flat on a couple of occasions.

Bought Gungrave from America quite a while ago now, really enjoyed it.

Enjoyed it so much I am thinking of getting it again region 2, more to save me room than anything as the box set is smaller but will definitely be watching it again

and look at my avatar, nuff said :D

I know what you mean, but I do believe that part of it is because the movie is relatively short in comparison to an anime tv series... The change on the media format played a large role, which can explain those flat moments. It is also worth to notice that a few of these "flat" moments are simply aesthetics. Maybe in an attempt to homage Kurasawa's original.

I think this is the point where you read the replies and decide for yourself.

I say Gungrave because it's just an all round better show.
