Gunbuster question (spoilers)

Hi there,

In the final episode when Norika and Kazumi stay behind to detonate the black hole bomb it takes them 12,000 earth years to get back.

Does this mean that Gunbuster still had warp speed despite being torn in half?

If so why did it take them so long to get back (in earth years) when it didn't take as long to reach that position from earth initially.

Many thanks

Ask Hideaki Anno.

But I just took it that something went wrong when they activated the warp speed as GunBuster was torn in half thus it took them so long to get back.

Yeah, it's never explained but it can be assumed they warped since otherwise they would've grown old/starved on the journey home (if they made it at all).

It's a goof I overlooked TBH since it made for such a brilliant ending. Science be damned, when 'Welcome home' lit up on earth's surface I didn't care.

One presumes that, to grant a minor degree of physical credibility to the ending, the mass of the Black Hole Bomb was so great that the warping of the GunBuster was required to prevent falling within its Schwarzchild Radius. However, the curvature of spacetime around the object would be such that returning to earth, though intuitively a relatively short distance away, would still involve traversing a distance that is very vast from the perspective of an observer in a frame inertial with respect to the earth. Of course, inertial frames are only a useful fiction, and I don't know of the full relativistic considerations involved in concieving of a body escaping from a supermassive object within curved spacetime, so this is only a vague approximation.
