GitS (1st Gig) box set - What are the subs like?

Hewo! :D

Virgin have reduced the price of the set for £19.99, making it seriously tempting when it looks very nice:

However, I'm always cautious with Mangle Ent. releases due to the lack of quality subs. I saw a user review on Amazon mention that the subs are horribly mistimed...

Put simply: Should a purist like me skip it?

The subs are pretty diabolical, if at all possible try to get hold of the US version because apparently the subs are fixed there. Can't remember who told me that but it was someone on these forums.....one of the regulars, hmm.

Anyways they're dodgy for the first couple of episodes, fix themselves for a while and then revert back to a horrible 3 odd second delay by the end. If you really want the series/havent got a multi-region dvd player then by all means get it, it tarnishes the experience but its by no means unwatchable - you can simply watch the dub on particularly bad episodes anyway. It was just a bit of an annoyance for a perfectionists like myself :p

The first 7 or so episodes.

I'm not asking if the series is good, I'm asking if the Mangle subs are good.

I was just asking because it would be a shame to miss out on such a good series because the subs are bad, when in my opinion its a very acceptable DUB.:)

It's more than acceptable. The dub is of a very high quality.:D

I don't see why anyone should be concerned about subtitles when the dub is, more than likely, better. If I like the dub, I'll stick with it, unless the subs and dub are equally good.

Not to start any kind of arguement here, and this has been talked about to death...

But I've some people here saying how the dub is better than the sub... The same people who have been having a go at anyone who say in other threads they prefer subs. Not pointing any fingers.

I'm not going to say any more on the subject =)

While I will watch the dub if it's good, I like having the option of watching anime with subs. I'm the same with Cowboy Bebop - I rate the dub slightly higher but I still watch it subbed from time to time.

£19.99 is very tempting for a nice looking set...it's just a shame that temptation is outweighed by me liking good subs on the anime I own.

Yeah I know that feeling. But it doesn't bother me so much.

Hahaha. Hah.

You're going to try to say that the people who are reccomending the dub are biased? But you don't even comment on the hoardes of folks that are competely, unreasonable biased about subs? Wow, just wow.

Anyway, the dub is really quite exceptional in GitS: SAC.

I'm going to answer your original question. From what I remember the subtitles on the first disk start out on episode one with a 1 or 2 second delay behind the dialogue which makes it unwatchable in Japanese. The second disk has some faults too like masses of dialogue literally flashing on and off screen in the blink of an eye not giving chance to read. Can't remember much about disk 3 and 4 so they must be fine. Disk 5 has a rather distracting black box surrounding the subtitles for the entire disk. Can't comment on the other 2 disks because that's where I stopped buying the UK release.

If you're happy with the dub then go for this set because that is one hell of a steal but if you want a watchable subtitled version i'm afraid you'll have to import.

About the dub, yes it is very good however I do prefer Akio Ohtsuka's Batou to Richard Epcar's portayal and although I enjoy Crispin Freeman's dub work(for the most part) Koichi Yamadera just is Togusa for me. That's not saying they are bad in the dub it's just that Epcar for one does get rather monotonous whereas Akio keeps the dialogue interesting(The roof scene in 2nd GIG was a prime example).

Now that i come to think of it you can prepare yourself for the subs of GITS by simply watching the subs of Excel Saga. I swear each episode lasted closer to 30-40 mins because i was pausing it to read the dialogue every 2 seconds!

Get over that and pausing it every now and then will seem like second nature!

I just finished watching the subs on this boxset and although they change from volume to volume that isnt distracting so much that it makes it un-watchable. Also the out of sync only happens say maybe twice an episode for about 2 seconds. I didnt notice any other problems with this release and i was very happen with my £19.99 purchase :D
