Ghost Hunt and Ouran

Aion

Time-Traveller
Two of Manga's releases that aren't as popular as some of their other, bigger name releases. Two series I haven't watched.

Are either of them worth watching? An anime titled 'Ghost Hunt' hardly sounds original, and going on the cover art it seems to be yet another anime that involves school girls in some manner. As much as I like school girls, I like to keep serious business and miniskirts separate in my mind - I'm male and can only focus on one or the other.

As for Ouran, I know it's popular but the male art has a yaoi thing going on and it's yet another anime with a school setting. Once again, it just screams originality when I glance at the cover art. Since the thought of seeing lots of males getting a little too friendly in school doesn't exactly tempt me, the cover art alone has put me off it.

Right now I don't feel like buying either. Ghost Hunt is currently £15 for two discs, while Ouran is £12 but less appealing. But I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of others to see if my title and cover art impressions are way off the mark because, at some stage, they probably won't cost a lot to buy - Manga's releases always drop in price.

not a fan of ouran, but ghost hunt is a decent little series about well a girl investigating the paranormal, apparently part 2 has some genuinely jumpy moments though.

Ouran is.... a reverse harem.

I would go for Ghost Hunt over Ouran if you end up wanting them. I've read, watched and am currently re-watching Ghost Hunt with my friend and had to drive home a little creeped out in the dark after watching the 3rd case. (i may be a bit a wuss, but generally hands appearing before a car windscreen as if it's been dimembered would make me crash).

As regards to the cover art, Mai is a school girl... but a large proportion of cases take place elsewhere. It really just focuses on the psychic stuff i suppose.

Manision of Malice was definitely creepy.
Lets see.
While Oran plays to the whole Yaoi theme it definitely plays it for laughs, as with most of the other things it plays with. Humour revolves around Haruhi being a reverse trap ( or a double reverse trap), the host club having more money than God and less common sense than jellyfish (though how much of it is an act is debatable). It's fairly light fun with a few tender moments.
Ghost hunt has a school girl or two school girls, but mainly is more of spooky suspense stories, generally split into arc's with a fairly large number of characters which are fairly well developed over the series. Only problem is that it doesn't have an ending, they finish off the last arc, but don’t have anything with the sense of closure you would expect for the final episode.
Both are worth watching (will probably pick them up eventually), but for a better idea have a look the manga of both as they are fairly faithful and it will give you an idea of the general tone and theme

That's kinda what I thought as well. Does that make me as manly as you Aion? :p

(though the fact that I did like the sound of the girl dressing up in boy's clothes probably ruins that idea)

I'm currently watching Ouran and it's ok. It has some hilarious episodes, such as the one with the yakuza kid.

The series takes the piss out of Bishoujo series and you can see all sterotypes there. In a way, It's sort of an Excel Saga for bishoujo. If you're not familiar / if you don't appreciate the genre, it is recommended.

Only reason I've seen then was because the review dvds were sitting on my cupboard waiting for a reviewer home to be sent.

I can't say I've seen a series besides Fruits Basket where one female is hunted by lots of males. I can't say I'm too hot on the idea of seeing another series of that type, either.

In every 1x M + 10 F harem series, there's usually a hot springs scene where breast sizes get discussed and breast feeling goes on. I wouldn't like to see the reverse of that...

Before posting I thought Ghost Hunt would be more my thing, and your Ghost Hunt thoughts have made me more certain. Anything dark and depressing is usually cup of tea, and it requires lots of boobs and/or very funny jokes to make me fond of the more comical types.

As for it lacking closure (hopeless), I won't mind too much as long as what goes before the end is high quality.

I'll probably go for the first volume of Ghost Hunt when it drops to the price Ouran is at right now. It can't hurt to have a look and support Manga at the same time.

I might at some point have a look at Ouran, too, but the five star review names on Play.com have made me believe it's girls/gays only type of series...

Where's HairyChests five star review!?

I saw one episode of Ghost Hunt and it didn't make me eager to see any more. But it seems well liked so it might be worth picking up the first set when it drops in price.

I have the first Ouran set but haven't watched it yet. Most helpful post ever \o/

I watched ghost hunt last year. Had some very creepy moments. Of course I was at the back of a dark lecture hall (anime society) so every now and then I thought something was then even though I knew no one was...added to the atmosphere :p

Can be a bit repetitive and in episodic/arc based as opposed to an overlying plot. Not five star stuff, but I enjoyed it. Much better then black blood brothers which is another recent release :p

Seen them both, reviewed them both. Click the WWW button down there, and look for the search box.

If you can't be asked...

Ouran 9/10

"It’s a sitcom. It’s anime certainly, and the sense of humour does have more than a few Japanese cultural references, but it’s a sitcom first and foremost, and more than that, it’s probably the funniest sitcom I have seen in years. Not even The Big Bang Theory has had me guffawing as Ouran High School Host Club has, and I’m a geek. The first half of this series was delightfully funny, occasionally risqué, often surreal, and really quite unexpected."

Ghost Hunt 7/10

"There's a lot to appreciate about Ghost Hunt. The animation may be pedestrian, but the character and world design, the lighting and attention to detail are all excellent. Creative editing also makes the show seem dynamic and energetic where the animation doesn't. The music is outstanding, establishing a mood and complementing the tone of the stories. The characters are all well written and interesting, and I certainly look forward to see how they develop in the second half of the series. There's also a nice blend of comedy and spookiness, enough to give the show a life beyond a scare story of the week. The problem for me is that the ghost stories themselves are so mundane. Then again, I ask a lot from my supernatural storytelling. If you like your ghost stories to be plain and simple, then this anime will go a long way to keep you entertained."

That should be tempered with the fact that I really have to have my arm twisted to like Ghost stories and the supernatural.

I picked up both. Bear in mind that my taste is quite different to yours though.

Ghost Hunt: This looked like a more up to date clone of Haunted Junction at first, so I ignored it. Then I watched 12 Kingdoms and on finding out they shared an author I decided to give Ghost Hunt a try after all, because 12 Kingdoms was amazing. On watching Ghost Hunt I didn't find it particularly scary though it was interesting and in the end I marathoned the first set in short order. One of the arcs did make me feel sombre. Speaking of that, most of the stories span several episodes so even though it's very "monster of the week" in design you do end up with more backstory and twists than a completely episodic show.

I haven't finished the series yet so I can't speak for the second half but I have already ordered it to find out what happens next.

Ouran: I have to be one of the only female anime fans around who hadn't seen this. Again I thought the manga version looked generic so completely avoided this in R1 until I saw a trailer. The animation style is very much like Fruits Basket and this holds out in the actual show. It's not meant to be taken seriously and is about as deep as a puddle but even on release it's at a good price point and is funny, full of life and well done. If you can handle the premise and are comfortable possessing something so covered in roses and smirking pretty boys :)

My husband really liked watching it over my shoulder so I'm not going to be able to finish it until he's free to watch the rest with me; again though I've preordered the remainder so the first part did something right.

That is reason enough to watch it. I only wished 12 kingdoms would have a proper end now =(

I would definetly get Ghost Hunt,I recently bought part 1 and watched all 13 episodes back to back and enjoyed them all.As for the price Play are charging £15 for Part 1 which at 13 episodes works out at little over a £1 an episode .Not bad value in my book anyway and having seen the whole series I can tell that Part 2 gets even better with the episode "The Bloodstained Labyrinth "especially creepy.
Go buy it,I don't think you'll be dissappointed. As for Ouran I have'nt seen it so can't really comment except to say that I don't really like moe anime and Ouran just seems like moe with guys rather than girls.

I've seen ouran they have all the episodes on funi.com

I thought it was very funny and i'm a guy
I've never had a problem with gays though

though none of the characters in it are gay cause its like a host club for women basically but they obviously seem like all shojo manga

Don't know bout ghost hunt looked pretty lame pretty much based on box art

£15 isn't bad value for the episode count, but it having only two discs included makes the price seem a little steep. It's a little silly really when less disc changing should be a plus...

I'll pick up GH when it drops to £12. It only came out this month and the price will drop sooner or later. As for Ouran, I'll wait until that drops to under £10 and then I'll have another think about it, or I'll just wait until a complete box set comes out and get the full series for cheap. It has to be highly rated for a reason other than having lots of males... there can't be 38,000 females and gays on MAL.

That has nothing to do with being gay. An dickhead is and dickhead no matter what gender they prefer.

Anyhow pissed that there wasn't a good deal for either at the expo today. BUt you can watch both for free and legally on the Funimaion website

Ghost Hunt is worth the watch. There however needs to be more of it as the characters stories are not concluded in what has been done.

Ouran was okay to watch and had some very funny bits but I don't think it will be your sort of thing Aion as the story is not that deep.

Ouran is great in my opinion, I was entertained throughout the entire series and laughed out loud pretty often. Not every episode is fantastic but enough are to warrent your attention. The best part of ouran is the characters, who all look like supporting cast to begin with and are all fleshed out to be much deeper and interesting then initally assumed.

Ouran is at it's strongest when it's dealing with the members of the Host Club and not focusing on other supporting characters (Kasanoda being the exception that proves the rule). If you're unsure check it out here on FUNi's streaming site.

If you can deal with the female fanservice and twincest, it's definately worth the purchase.
Might not be your thing but then again I don't know what your thing is. d:
