Ghibli On TV

Ghibli films showing in the holidays, and only one is on Film4

Spirited Away (dubbed) - BBC2 10:40am Tue 21 Dec

Cat Returns (subbed) - Channel4 3:00am Wed 29 Dec

(Yeah my mistake for missing out some, but I normally just type 'Japanese' into TV Guide UK and get the movies, but a few didn't come up this way)

Tales From Earthsea (subbed) - Channel 4 3:45am New Years Eve

Kiki's Delivery Service (dubbed) - Film4 11:00am Mon 3 Jan

Also, a really good Japanese live action movie

Kamikaze Girls (subbed) - Film4 1:40am 26 Dec

I'm gonna catch The Cat Returns and Tales From Earthsea.

Alwasy wanted to get the Ghibli collection but only got Spirited Away, Howl and Ponyo. Been toying with the idea fo buying them all on DVD for the pasy couple years, but think I may as well buy them as they're released on Blu-Ray now.

Nausicaa and Ponyo atm, but with Laputa and Yamadas (Japan) just released we could be getting about 2/3 Blu-rays a year from now on.

I hope this is good, 'cause i'm gonna be staying up to watch it now xD

Don't get the wrong idea it isn't a gory action flick though, this is more of a comedy, slice of life with a bit of gang violence thrown in, heres a synopsis:

A former gangster's teenage daughter is obsessed with 18th-century French clothes and completely fails to fit in in her home town. She tries to make some money by selling counterfeit goods, leading to an unlikely friendship with a tough female biker. Japanese comedy, starring Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya

Also, I haven't seen this and might not but, if anybody wants to

Memories of Matsuko
An aimless failed musician spends his days drinking heavily after being kicked out of his band and dumped by his girlfriend. When ordered by his father to clear out his dead aunt's house, he becomes fascinated by her eventful but tragic life, that saw her drift through a series of affairs and into the Yakuza underworld. Japanese drama, starring Miki Nakatani and Eita
Film4 12:55am Thu 30 Dec

Just saw an advert for Film4. They're doing films you should see in the new year weekend or something and Kiki's Delivery was in it. Any good?

Kiki's Delivery Service is an AWESOME film, it's my favourite- though thats not a common favourite Ghibli favourite...
It's quite a bit lighter and a bit more childish than some of the others + Kirsten Dunst does what I think is a horrendous job as the lead in the dub, I can't stand it.
Also the opening song on the US and Europe release is far inferior to that of the Japanese version. I'm inclined to say you must watch it, but not in dub or US release form. (I think all Ghibli DVD's are £5 at my local HMV).

I just noticed a couple of "reviews" of the Ghibli movies in the Christmas Radio Times.

Spirited Away - ****
Earthsea - ***
Cat Returns - **

As much as I will always defend Earthsea, Cat Returns is definitely a better film than it. However in context I can see how people may (superficially) see Cat Returns as a Lightweight Spirited Away.

Spirited Away - ****
Earthsea - *
