Gantz

Right, I searched for Gantz topics and found two anime topics and one manga topic. I still decided to create a fresh one though, although it's hard to explain why. Anyway, my online rental service just sent me volume one of the Gantz anime and after watching it I found it to be quite decent. The only thing that has annoyed me so far to be honest is the fact that I can't seem to decide if I prefer watching it subbed or dubbed, as both are actually good in my eyes.

Now after doing some quick reading on this I have learned there's a manga, which is a lot more popular. According to Wikipedia the manga is quite long, if this quote is anything to go by: "Gantz is divided into two phases. Phase 1 consists of the first 237 chapters. On November 22, 2006, the first chapter of Phase 2, chapter 238, was released. The series is currently at chapter 249."

I'm considering reading the manga and just leaving the anime alone. The problem is that once again according to Wikipedia the manga is not even out in the US, and the only way you can read it is by 'scanlation'. Yet after reading all the comments that many of you have read it, you either know fluent Japanese or there's somewhere where I can actually read the manga, anyone know where?

Also if you haven't expressed your opinion in the previous topics, what do you think of the Gantz franchise?

i've not touched on the anime, though i may actually look into it. Though i have started on the manga recently and find it alright but i'm only 20 c15 odd chapters into it.

Actually, I'd recommend you watch the anime. The last three or four episodes weren't in the manga canon because they had to invent an ending to the story, but other than those, it's a straight up adaptation and not a particularly bad one at that - especially on DVD, given the original TV fan subs were cut, the DVD version reinstates a lot more gore.

To be honest I may actually just go with the DVD because the manga seems very, very long... If there's one thing I seem to dislike it's a series that is dragged out far too long such as Naruto or Bleach, I can just about tolerate 50+ episode series' like Eureka 7 and Full Metal Alchemist.

I've sent back Vol. 1 and requested Vol. 2 & 3 from my rental service so they should arrive in a few days. To be honest I quite enjoyed what I saw so far, but one thing that put me off was the whole men in black style alien hunting crap. Maybe it was supposed to be funny, but the green onion alien just totally ruined the serious mood for me, really.

Read the manga. The anime is mega fail, the ending is ****.

Just go to Stoptazmo or whatever to download it.

By the way that forum is pretty cool, are there any better ones or others similar to it? It's a great source to preview manga before I buy'em since normally I just make my purchases based on advice from others.

The characters from this anime really really annoys me... Katou's wimpyness, Kei the perv who is good-for-nothing, Miss Tits and all the other characters... I do like Nishi though....

The story development is too slow then I figurued out that it was just really dragged out....

I did quite enjoy it but not that much....

All the characters are meant to be realistic [minus Kishimoto's massive breasts], not idiotic shounen heroes who run into ANYTHING head first at any time. =|

I do know that they meant to be or trying to be realistic but for Katou, who is so big and strong that almost killed the guy who wants to take the **** out of him, cries like a wimp. In reality guys like that doesn't really cry like that.... For Kei to hesitate to annihilate the Onion Spring alien and killed (let say) his friend is just too unrealistic for me and that annoys me... However I complain, I don't know why I'm still watching it... I'm on the second series now(14-26)... I hope it gets better...

Actually, people like that do exist who're like Katou, there characters are much... rarer, so it's weird to see him being pushed around with his sheer size and all. It gets better in the second part, but the ending... well, you think of what you will with it, when it ends.

I guess that suppose to mean a forewarning of a disappointing ending... but I hear the the manga itself isn't finish yet...

and yeah people like that exist... hmmmmm

I quite liked the gritty portrayal of characters who are all too human, its hardly pleasant viewing as a result but is somehow addictive.

As for the ending, while it does annoy to a degree I guess it was all they could do given constraints of budget and material available (perhaps they should have waited long before making an anime of it :( )

So yeah I have checked out some of the manga and simply from reading the first few chapters I can see quite a contrast in difference between the two. I think once I finish with the anime (I'm up to volume five) I'll start reading the manga. :]
