Today at the American anime convention "AnimeNext", US anime company Funimation announced they had acquired the licensing rights to Studio GONZO's (Hellsing, Last Exile) graphic adult drama Speed Grapher.

UK anime distributor MVM have already brought several other Funimation titles to the UK, (including Fruits Basket) so fans should keep a watchful eye on them for news of a UK release.

Great news, the animation may be a sore point, and it lacks the pristine visuals of Gonzo's best, the storyline however is fantastic, corrupt government official, twisted set pieces and a photographer with a killer eye....literally, this has to be one of the most offbeat and memorable series in a while. Can't wait :)

I think the animation is great, it fits the mood of the show perfectly, Its about time someone snapped up this awesome series.

Next series to be picked up by FUni, Trinty blood, i bet you any money.

It's a given I'd say, especially when you consider they've had ownership of the domain name for a month or two now.

Well thats standard practice for them when theyre trying to get a title, they bought a domain for Fafner and Gankutsuou both of which went to Geneon in the end. Trinity Blood is the type of show Geneon would go after so id say the reason no one has annouced a licence fro it yet is that both of them are tyring to get it

Hopefully we'll see this one reach our shores. Gonzo seem to have reached something of a pinnicle in terms of the quality of their work, and Paranoia Agent's descriptions, both here and in IRC, have secured it high upon my anime-to-buy scroll.

Although I initially wasn't interested in this title, the recommendations from IRC have forced me to reconsider, to the point where it's secured a spot to my own 'to buy' scroll on its eventual release.

I stopped watching Speed Grapher around the 5th or 6th episode after becoming too distracted by the choppy and low budget animation. The story itself was alright, but the characters never evoked enough emotion from me and I found myself watching it because it dared to push forward with novelty sleeze and violence.

Of the big three Gonzo shows this season (which will all be licensed by FUNimation), Basilisk is the only one I'm really excited about. Hardcore, stylish ninja and samurai action, nothing more nothing less. It's everything Ninja Scroll TV should have been.

FUNimation have also played a clever game with the fansub community. I'm sure they could have announced these three as pre-licensed a few months back, but there-by cutting off the majority of pre-release excitement the fansub circuit generates (series like Fantastic Children and KURAU: Phantom Memory are virtually unknown in the anime community right now, despite being amazing series, due to being prelicensed). Now everyone knows about the "GONZO three" and they have already built up sizable fanbases as a result. Nice to see a company using some genuine marketing intelligence for once.

Yeah you do have to give them credit for that and they are contacting alot of fansub groups and asking them nicely to stop distro of there stuff but i do get the feeling its the old iron fist in a velvet glove approach
