Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood movies

Hey guys,

Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong section..

I'm finally getting around to buying both the FMA Brotherhood series boxsets on Blu and was wondering what the deal is with the movies?

Please bare in mind that I've not yet watched any of the series, so please, no spoilers.

Are the movies cannon or just 'filler' stories? Do they add anything to the overall series?

If any of them are 'cannon' - is there a specific point that I need to watch the movies whilst during the series? (for example - "watch movie 1 after episode 24 as it fills out backstory for *insert-character*, etc.)

Even if the movies *are* filler, are they worth it at all? or are they simply 'meh'?

Thanks a ton in advance guys. It's much appreciated :)

There's only 1 FMA Brotherhood movie and that's "The Sacred Star of Milos." It's takes place about 75% into the series and is basically filler.

The second movie, "The Conqueror of Shamballa", is a conclusion to the original FMA anime. It was OK, but many consider it a letdown. I think it is canon though.

If you haven't purchased them already, I recommend the FMA:Brotherhood OVAs, which are based on 'bonus chapters' of the manga.

I know the first one is set before/at the beginning of the series, but I'm pretty sure the rest contain flashbacks, so I don't suppose it would matter too much about the order.

There are those for the original anime, but I can't comment on them as I haven't seen them.

I enjoyed both movies. As mentioned, Shamballa is a direct continuation of the original series, so if you haven't watched that then you might be somewhat confused.

Sacred Star of Milos is an enjoyable stand alone film in the Brotherhood continuity. Not necessary viewing but if you like FMA:B then you should definitely watch it. Ed and Al are sort of underused in it imo, and I got the feeling like the makers were toying with the idea of a spin off series to come from this, but nothing has happened re: FMA since so maybe not.

As others have said, the first movie, Conqueror of Shamballa is a direct sequel to the original anime from 2003, which split away from the manga source material about half-way through. It's canon to the 2003 series, but has no connection to Brotherhood and probably won't make a word of sense without having seen the original 2003 series.

While it was released after the airing of Brotherhood, The Sacred Star of Milos is more loose in that could probably compliment both the original 2003 anime and Brotherhood (I wonder if this was the original intention, considering how the only established FMA characters that appear are in both anime). It's not canon though and feels more like Ed and Al leading a typical shonen manga movie as opposed to a Fullmetal Alchemist movie anyway (if that makes sense).
