Is there anyone here that is a fan of either the old or/and new Fist Of The North Star series and movies?

I am a bit of a fan of the 1986 Anime Movie that was very well dubbed in english by Streamline Pictures which I saw on Video when it was first released in the UK by Manga Video back in 1992. For some reason it hasn't been released on DVD in the UK yet. The animation and character designs were very good. The animation was done by Toei Doga (the same company that did Transformers: The Movie). Although a very brutal and graphically violent movie with a very bleak and depressing background story and setting, the fight scenes are creative and entertaining and the musical score is good but very dated to listen to now.
The action is fast and to the point with far less boring spiritual talking and words of wisdom during the fights unlike the series. There was also two endings to the anime movie, the first one was in the Streamline Pictures version where Raoh almost defeats Ken until Lynn interrupts. The second one was in the original japanese language version in which the fight between Ken and Raoh was a draw.

I'm not really a fan of the old and new series though. I personally think it is because the fight scenes drag on quite a bit due to the huge amount of talking that goes on during these fight scenes which gets rather boring rather than just straight into the action and then leave the talking afterwards. The character designs and animation though are not bad although the old series is looking rather dated now along with the musical score. The new series is alot more up-to-date though which is good.

I've also read volume one of the graphic novel which ends with Ken defeating the Colonel Psi-Warrior. The graphic novel is pretty good with some good character designs and artwork, but very graphically violent.

The 1995 Live Action movie though is pretty dissapointing. The acting is pretty awful especially by Gary Daniels who is known for his wooden acting skills. The two fight scenes at the end though were not bad. But the film itself is very low budget looking and got released straight to video at the time.

Anyone else a fan of the Fist Of The North Star franchise?

That is AWESOME. For some crazy reason I bought all the TV series tapes that Manga released in the UK, which comprised the first 20-odd episodes, and thought it was entertaining nonsense.

I have a soft spot for the 1986 movie, as it was one of the first anime I watched and so insanely over-the-top, but the recent OVA series released by ADV is horrible. As you say, the the 1986 movie dispenses with all the talking and moralizing that drags down shounen action anime.

When my copy of Neo Tokyo (finally) arrives in the post, it'll come with a copy of New Fist of the North Star. Based on preconceptions, I'm likely to discard the latter.

Noticed that a couple've days ago when I was looking for FMA on their streaming site. Bookmarked it. For some reason I can't help but think its going to go soon. Like, getting taken down for some reason.

On the contrary, there's more coming

The North American anime distributor Funimation has announced that it signed a partnership with Toei Animation to start distributing the following seven titles on its website:

* Air Master
* Captain Harlock
* Digimon Adventure 02
* Fist of the North Star
* Galaxy Express
* Pretty Cure
* Slam Dunk

Toei Animation itself tried to enter the North American DVD market in 2005 by releasing Air Master, Slam Dunk, and another title (Interlude), but only shipped the first volumes before leaving the market. The Crunchyroll media distribution website streams most of these titles except Air Master, even though it lists Air Master as a potential title.

I desperately want to see Galaxy Express and Captain Harlock.
