Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus

McIcy

Mushi-shi
Got this for christmas and have been playing it for the last few days when i get a chance to sneak away from the family.

In my opinion its a really good game, takes a while to get used to the controls, like drawing your gun is the same button as firing it, but they work really well when you get used to there functions, plus the game has kept Vincents Limit Breaks which you can use (they are collectable power-ups like potions or phoenix downs and can be activated at any point to help you go BEAST).

Also there is a modding and construction system for your weapons:

3 basic weapons are handgun, machine gun, rifle. You just attach new barrels, triggers, scopes, materia to it to change whether it fires faster or more powerfully or where it can be used as a sniper rifle(which is great fun). You also have the option to fist fight, if you just open fire randomly and run out of ammo (yes I did this) then you can holster your gun and streetfight your way through enemies.

Materia - This is something you can equip to your weapons, So far I have only found Fire, Lightning and one that works as a shield and raises your characters defense points. The materia works more like a second weapon in the game (think granade launcher), and uses up your magic each time its used.

Early levels are easy to get you into it and used to the controls then the difficulty increases but does not draw you away from the game itself.

Graphics - The graphics are top notch and the cut away scenes are laced with the type of CGI we saw used for the Final Fantasy Advent Children Movie.

Game Play - Really easy to pick up (the controls take some time to master and you will need to do the Training Mission at the start to understand the basics like weapon construction and Combat Controls)

Special Character - So far I have only run into Reeve (aka Cait Sith) and Yuffie but other chatracters pop up in these scenes including I am told Cloud Strife himself.

Length - Until I complete it I won't know but there are 3 sub bosses and one leader, currently I have met all sub-bosses but not faught any of them as Reeve interrupts one encounter and I went BEAST on another and blacked out.

In my opinion about 7/10, its not a spectacular own (choosing whether you turn experience points into gil or experience for the character is annoying as your effectively choosing whether you want more life/defense points or a better weapon and I want Both)

Will probably go up to an 8/10 when I get some real time to sit down and get to grips with it after the new year is over.

Sounds more promising than what some so-called critics have said about it. I'll have to invesitigate this one further in the not-to-distant future.

Thanks for the information about it.

I look at it as a mix between DMC (limit breaks in stead of devil mode, multiple weapons, 3rd person scrolling battle) and Gungrave's anime styling and story

Hmv mucked my orders up i have to wait a week to get it

sounds promising the problem the critics have with it becuase it's another ff7 title -.-

From all the reviews it's got it's meant to be pretty dire, 6 out of 10, 2 out of 5, weak gunplay and AI? The only thing I want to know is if they left Gackt's songs Redemption and Longing in the game and if this game doesn't have the option to have Japanese voice actor cast it fails.

Of course it doesn't have the option to have Japanese Voice Actors, but the voices they have chosen are bang on, Vincent sounds brilliantly moody.

I would like to add that I have now taken on the first big boss, and it wasn't that challenging, the levels are actually harder (especially as you can only carry a limited number of items). Try out the early levels in Normal Mode to see how you do then kick it up to Hard for more of a challenge.

McIcy, I certainly agree with your review. But to add, The FPS shooting made the game less FF like.

I got it because of Vincent, he my second fav character (1st is Cloud) and I think Shelke is cool.

I was upset that Cloud is only a appearence, I wanted to control him!!!!!!!

Its pretty interesting though when you consider that scores such as 6/10 and 2/5 are consdiered "dire" mind. Its one of the reasons I take a lot of video game review scores with a pinch of salf (same with films / movies and TV programme review scores too). That's not to say I ignore reviews, they are often very useful.

But the lack of a decent, coherent score system and a consistent review template can be misleading.

Thought I'd share that.

I'd guess (until I play it for myself) that this won't be the most spectacular of video games, but it won't be nearly as bad as some "critics" have tried to make-out (and then gave it a solid 6/10 score at the end, contradicting the whole review in a single stroke and making a mockery of the process!).

Yeah I'd go with this theory, I got it thinking it won't be great but it'll kill an afternoon (only £17.99) or most of the xmas period and got really into it. Just waiting for the CGI scenes is worth the money in some ways

As soon as I finally complete FFVII, I'm gonna watch Advent Children and start on this.

I've had FFVII for six and a half years...I always drift away from it, then restart the whole thing. :?

I'm gonna complete it this time if it's the last thing I do (preferably not, 'cause I wanna see the movie and do other stuff with my life)..over 15 hours in and still on disc one. -_-

I don't have it, and don't want it.
(You can tell this post is a rant now, can't you?)

From what I've heard, it's pretty crap. I don't think the reviewers are mauling it just because it's an FFVII game (as much as I hate the fact that FFVII is being milked), I think they have some good points.

I wish they'd stop making FF spin-offs. FF seems more like a series of series now than just one series. We have Final Fantasy, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, Ivalice Alliance, Crystal Chronicles and The FFXIII series. Not good. Out of all those, there has been one truly great FF game (or so the critics say, it's not released over here yet), and that's FFXII. Now if they stopped making so many spin-offs and concentrated on proper titles in the series...

Heh, finally someone sees the light besides me, I'm gonna have to say I do enjoy FF games, but not the type of crappy half-assed attempt games like X-2 or DoC, and finally we get to see Crisis Core is a game, but is still a hack and slash. ;/
I'm a have to agree on what Espy's been saying, they should concentrate on the games themselves rather than the spin-offs.

I liked DoC, though i know it has a lot of people putting it down. It is slightly easy for me, since i am finding hard mode to be more like easy/normal, but i still like it. The story is alright, getting to know more about vincent's background, and the gameplay is ok but a bit simple. I found it to be a bit short as well.
you only control cait sith once and only vincent before and after that, also the FFVII main cast(bar aeris) do make appearances, though i never saw Red XII

In all, i would give it about a 7 out of 10, but i am trying to get all the extra missions unlocked and the other weapon so i am busy with that when i am on it.

Red XIII has one spoken line in Advent Children. I don't think they care about him anymore.

Don't care I completed the original game with Barrett and Cid so the other characters are like the back story to me lol

I'm probably contradicting myself to a degree with this point (well, I am human after all), but if I had to "lay my cards on the table", I'd agree with Espy for the most part here (though if there is a good quality spin-off, I won't turn it down - I liked Final Fantasy X-2 for example).

Its mildly amusing because only the other day I was complaining to some one at work that the Final Fantasy franchise is so over-blown and saturated at the moment, I think the franchise has lost some of its impact.

When it was just games being released in the series using the number system, there was something special about it, but now - as Espy started to list - all kinds of spin-offs and Final Fantasy's that aren't really Final Fantasy's are crowding-in and "contaminating" the once wholesome recipe!

Even Final Fantasy XI (#11) doesn't feel as if it should have been a proper entry into the series, being an online RPG and all that.

SquareEnix should be careful, they don't wanna become the video game industries "answer" to Enron.

I see your point Hovis! I love the Final Fantasy games and by this statement I mean the main ones not so much the spinoffs. Yes I enjoyed X2 but it had a few flaws that really pissed me off like if you complete certain missions you don't get the best kit or if you miss one little bit (my ongoing rant about Paynes ultimate costume) you can't go back later.

But the add-ons have never been a scratch on VII, VIII or X (sorry but I hated IX I felt is was inferior to the others in story and character design). I have managed to avoid XI as I have only just got a good enough Net Connection and am not really into long term online games (plus my pc is usualy downloading stuff for work). I am really looking forward to XII and XIII as I am hoping they will be a return back to the epic stories we have seen in VII and VIII (the best stories in my opinion).

Only time will tell if they make some more amazing games or sink themselves and the franchise by release quantity instead of quality.

Well, if you think it's worth a shot then I'll go for it when I can find it cheap, there are promo copies floating around up for grabs.

Also, I take magazine reviews with a salt-cellar - everyone rating DMC above Chaos Legion tells me all I need to know on that score.
