A-1 Pictures' popular television anime adaptation of Hiro Mashima's popular Fairy Tail magical action series is still going strong, having recently surpassed 250 broadcast episodes and now, the world is set to expand further than Edolas.

Last year the author published a short prequel series titled Fairy Tail Zero, which depicts the events leading up to the founding of the franchise's titular guild. The fifty-second volume of the main manga series, which was recently published in Japan, has now confirmed that an anime adaptation of this origin story will premiere in January 2016.

Mamiko Noto has been confirmed to be reprising her role of Marvis Vermillion, the founding Guild Master of Fairy Tail. The principle cast will be completed by Katsuyuki Konishi, Hiroshi Shirokuma and Yoshihisa Kawahara, who will be returning as Yury Dreyar, Precht Gaebolg and Warrod Sequen respectively.

Last weeks, Kodansha Comics announced that they will be publishing the single Fairy Tail Zero collected volume in July 2016. Kodansha Comics are currently publishing the mainline manga in English, while the anime is currently being simulcast by Crunchyroll and has previously been released in the United Kingdom by Manga Entertainment.

Re:

Definitely excited for this! I hope they don't stretch the story out and go for a long running series, I'd prefer 12-13 episodes to cover it properly and then leave it alone.

I do wonder if we're beginning to get to the end of Fairy Tail now, what with Zero getting so much attention and the current and previous arc of the manga beginning to finally explain some of the long running secrets of the series.

My reaction to this announcement:

Mavis is easily my favourite character in Fairy Tail; there's absolutely no competition.

I'm actually surprised that this is getting its own series, as opposed to being adapted into the main-series as a non-filler stop-gap.
