An extra high quality trailer (<a href="http://i.yimg.jp/images/evt/5cm/4/preview8000k1280_720.wmv">70MB direct download</a>) for 5 Centimeters per Second has been released for those interested in following this new project from <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/search_all.php?search=makoto+shinkai&submitsearch=Site+Search">Makoto (Voices of a Distant Star, The Places Promised...) Shinkai</a>. The trailer will only be available for one week.

This is an ultra high resolution video with amazing animation quality - to be blunt, get this now and complain about his movies later. It looks damn fine, better than DVD quality.

That was worth the wait for the download! I've never split hairs over the issue of how strong Shinkai's storylines are anyway, especially in this case where the film consists of shorter segments that don't lend themselves to a more involved plotline. Besides, he's so adept at evoking feelings and emotions through the imagery instead - the imagery in that particular trailer is quite spectaular.

As beautiful as this trailer appears, am I the only one who is starting to see a pattern in the overall themes of his productions, unrequited love caused by distance? This could be titled "Voices of a Distant Suburb" or "A Place Promised by a Punctual Train Company"

I see the trailer in that original link is only 30-something MB, and since the original is no longer available on 5cm.yahoo.co.jp, I hope you won't mind me pointing to the 70 MB version available for download here.
The stream really doesn't do it justice, this *has* to be watched in full-res.

And yes, I'm also seeing quite a lot of patterns in Shinkai's works. But they're still getting better with each animation he does, and I really can't imagine 5cm as better than The Promised Place...
