Evangelion Series Vs Rebuilds

Last week I finished watching the Neon Genesis Evangelion Series and found it to be the best anime I have ever watched. Therefore I was automatically drawn in to the rebuild movies. I have just finished watching 1.11 and thought it was really good but no where near the original. I would just like to get some thoughts from everyone on the series compared to the rebuilds.

1.11 is a retelling of the first arc of the series, and while it gives it some cinema sheen, there's little that is new. But from 2.22 it's a different story altogether.
